I apologize for the 59th thread on this topic, but I did read a bunch of the previous ones and did not seem to fnid a definative answer. Thanks in advance for bearing with me.

My Dk40 w/ KL401 and KB2875 is at 48 hours, and my inlaws are coming this weekend (meaning I'll be outside or in the shop all weekend), so I'm going to get my 50 hour service out of the way. I have two questions:

1 - Did you guys replace your hydraulic fluid, or just the filter and top off the fluid?
2 - My manual says that the system holds 11 gallons of fluid. When you replaced your hydro fluid, did you find that you needed 11 gallons to get it back to full, or was it less?

I think most of us drained and replaced all of it(or at least all that you get at the drain plug), so it will be a few gallons under 11, so 2 5 gallons buckets will do it. Make sure you get the premium stuff, I did notice a slight performance difference between the regular grade hyd fluid(bought it by accident) and the premium, so I drained it and switched it. That was on my fluid change around the 500hr mark.

Sleeping in the shop too????

I replaced the fluid, and yes about 10 gal. I needed some for the front axle also, so I bought 15 gal. A lot of the guys use 80w/90 instead for the front axle. The manual says either. I used the Mobilefluid 424. Be sure to have a chain wrench for that gawdawful hydraulic filter by the right rear tire. An ordinary oil filter wrench is not going to be enough. I wound up driving a rod thru it to use as a lever. Everything else is pretty easy.. Don't forget the 2 drain plugs by the rear axle final drives. They are small, and easy to miss, but all the plugs are painted orange. The huge one in the middle of the transmission, the fluid comes out with a big woosh.. so be prepared. I used a dollar general plastic 62 quart "tote" to collect it all.. Don't forget the weight of the full "tote" though!

I drained and replaced mine along with the two filters. I don't recall if it took more than two five gallon pails as I had an extra gallon or two on hand that I use to top off occasionally (broken hydraulic hose etc).

it is confusing, nut i drained and replaced mine and did not just do the filters. I have too much invested in this to worry about the cost of the fluids. I know all about break in on gears, and wanted all the old oil out.

Thanks.TSC Traveller UTF is going to cost me $70 - the hydro filter cost me more than that, so I can't see skimping on it.

Follow-up question, that I think I know the answe to, but would like to double-check:
I did not see any drain/flush requirments in my KB2875 manual. Do I need to do anything to drain and refill it as well?
I'm guessing that the tractor's main resevoir gets replaced, and the fluid that was left in the BH just gets mixed in with the new stuff the first time I run it, and that it is nothing to worry about.

Did anyone do anything special/additional to accomodate their BH with their hydro oil change?

As far as I know there is no requirement to try to drain/flush any loaders or backhoes, It just gets mixed in, and drained next time. The idea of the first drain at 50 is to get the "cuttings" and other crap left over from manufacture and the burrs on gears and things that mostly congregate in the sump and get them out.

I just changed the Filters and will do that again at 200 hours. But I did change the Front axle, 1.75 Gal

Murph, I haven't checked the manual but after the 50hr, isn't the next hydro service at 400 hrs or something like that?

Hydro filters at every 200hrs and hydro fluid at every 400hrs is what my manual states.
