On the farm, if you had only one tool what would it be?

Lowes still sells Maddocks. I have one that my Father gave me many years ago. BTW, do you own one. They can be used in many ways.

Well, I'll have to admit Lowes is aware that many people misspell the name. If you search for a "maddock", they will sell you a "mattock." :D
Shop mattock at Lowes.com: Search Results!

Nope, don't own one. I have used one a bit helping a friend, but nothing serious. They have their uses but like many hand tools, power equipment and tractors have made them less necessary.

Actually what I have is a "pick maddock[sic]"...

Around here if you don't have a machine and you need to dig a hole (even a shallow one) a shovel is worthless except for removing the spoil left from the mattock...

45 years ago when I first started working on our road I wanted to put in a culvert where a spring crosses...The local man that sold us the property loaned me a mattock and told me to be careful...that there was a lot of one footed (mattock) operators after using one...

I have one hand tool that I use more than any other (including hammers and screwdrivers)...it a short handled pick mattock...would be lost without it (I do have a spare)...

my daughter answered better than me too: a tractor

my daughter answered better than me too: a tractor

In the spirit of 'O. Henry'...it seems ironic to me for a farmer to be limited to "one" tool and have a tractor as that one tool and not be able to have a plow (second tool) or any other implement...

...BTW...IMO a TLB is three tools...

If I was a real farmer...I would choose a plow...the OP did not say anything about how many horses/ mules etc...

A big hammer. Whatever else you buy is going to need to be fixed with a hammer at some time so get a big one. Then you can use it to hit yourself on the head for thinking you could accomplish something with only one tool. Wait, a metal detector might do it to use to find the tools that everyone else gas lost including their tractors.

A wife: to appease you, please you, tease you and to have someone line up the wagon tongue and drop in the pin. Also to feed the chickens, help with the garden, keep you warm on cold nights and to bring you future farm helpers, but most important to be your best friend. :) :) :)

On edit I would not call my wife a tool or she would probably hit me with a tool.

The check book? That's the only single tool I know that can do everything.

Good one. Other than the check book, I would say the bull. I can do everything else by hand, but danged if I can make a calf.
