There are some really good movies mentioned already. Some of my all time favorites in fact.
But, let me suggest just a couple more:
"Good Will Hunting"
Good Will Hunting (1997) - IMDb
This was nothing like I thought it would be and its a really good movie.
"Sherlock Holmes" the 2009 version but I also suggest any of the numerable really old versions.
Sherlock Holmes (2009) - IMDb
"To Have and Have Not" - one of the best of the best! The first movie Bogart and Bacall made together. Everything else is history after this movie. Watch it and you will see what I mean.
To Have and Have Not (1944) - IMDb
Les Misérables - Really an all time great movie that is a timeless masterpiece that explores the human condition, redemption and the inherent good in man.
This is the newest version and is very good even if all the dialog is in song.
Les Misérables (2012) - IMDb
This is my favorite version:
Les Misérables (1998) - IMDb
This movie has been made for full screen probably at least 7 times. Imdb shows 10 listings including a concert version and a TV mini-series and a made for TV version. That should tell you how timeless this movie is. The oldest was in 1934 and one in 1935. I did watch the one from 1935 which had English subtitles and featured Charles Laughten as Inspector Javert. Wouldn't recommend starting with that one.
Good movie watching! I'm sure you will find some great movies to watch from all the fine suggestions so far. I am looking forward to being reminded of more of my favorites too.
