Texas Fall/Winter thread!

I think the part of Texas I would invade  is E. Texas, but far enough north and west to evade the coastal humidity. Maybe that is wishful thinking. I've never spent much time in Texas. Visited the cousin in Goldthwaite, and in Austin many years ago. Traveled across S. Texas as kid on vacation, and attended a business thing in San Antonio about 12 years ago.

Edit: Add "The Last Picture Show" to your movie list. I think that is set in W. Texas.

East Texas for the most rain in Texas. Kinda like northern Louisiana. If you don't want lots of folks around and mountains.........West Texas. We even have a desert out there. Well, sandhills. If you want blizzards..........the Panhandle. If you want hot humidity....South Texas. We have it all.

With all being normal, East Texas has around 36 inches of rain a year. Those pine trees need a lot.

jinman; That is a very handsome little boy. His mom is very pretty too! I agree with bindian, even though I don't know to which hat she refers. You need to get 4 generations in the photo, when they visit again! That would be neat!

FG,

the link to the photo is in post #226 by wroughtn_harv from when they got together. Jim is wearing a straw cowboy hat with the front brim bent up with a Texas flag, a US flag, I think a snake is on it, along with a few other "critters". He is talking on a cell phone and wearing a black TBN t shirt. That is the hat I was referring about.

OK, 36 inches of rain is good by me but I'm not much for too many people. This info is a starting point for me. Thank you.

Many years ago, I heard far east Texas got about 45" a year, central Texas about 30" a year, and west Texas about 15" a year.

All I could remember is 36. Maybe 36 inches, at one time, was the minimum. I do know there are too many folks around me. Northern and Deep East Texas would be "thinner".

Nothing, it's wonderful but as one grows older there is less desire for winter when you, yourself are in the autumn of your days.

Ohio is great--for now. But I'm inside when I would rather be outside. It's OK since I'm retired but in five or ten years, if I live that long, warmer will feel better. So I'm thinking Texas because I know some Texans and like them. I spent time there in 1970 and loved it. So it's on the list as are the Carolinas, maybe AZ, TN, KY or something I haven't thought of. I hope I have the time to ponder.

Water is because I like the gardens, trees and life that rainfall makes possible. :)

She's as right as rain!

Pretty much I-35 is the dividing line in Texas. East of I-35 gets over 36" of rainfall most years and west gets progressively less the further you go west.

There is something to like in every corner of the state. There are 254 counties in Texas and I've been to all but a small handful. i would live in any of them.

As a kid I dreamed of being a "Texan" .. Then 12 yrs ago when I had an opportunity to do that .. Well Oklahoma just won out ... When I crossed the Red River I discovers Oklahoma and it was like the day I met my bride ... I just couldn't look any further !!!

I'm truly comfortable in Oklahoma ... Being close to Texas is great and shop a lot across the line.

When I got my Texas auctioneers license ... I put the Iceing on the cake... Life is good 35 miles from the state line !!!!

Jim, great photos:thumbsup: They sure do grow up fast!! AND You look good brother, just more edumacated look'n:D

Sixdogs, if you could be fortunate to find a place with a live, active spring, you would have additional water features. I visited my brother over the holiday in Ft. Towson Oklahoma, they have 380 acres and several springs and one small creek that runs year round. Just plain beautiful with huge Red oaks and not to temperate of a climate. He is about 40 miles from Paris Texas, which gets similar weather.

I understand your thoughts and have had them all including painful joints when the weather changes and "cabin fever" when it is too cold/icy to work outside long.
I have lived many places for a couple year time periods, that when you go there on a vacation look so great and make you think, wow... this would be a great place to live.
But....You really have to live in a place for a year or two to experience what it is like as far as overall environment/weather, living costs, taxes, facilities, and people.
I sometimes recall a statement from a University prof during my first time living away from home many years ago. Something like... you all are excited about the new people you are meeting and socializing with from all over the world and learning about their homes and lifestyles. But it is a proven fact that the majority of you will marry a girl from your hometown or from a town/location that has a similar environment, morals, and values that you grew up in and be most comfortable living and raising your children in a similar place. My wife and I fit in that group and have no desire to move again.
Whatever you do, I wish you happiness and good health in your senior years.

Ron, I think that is 1000% right and great points. I think as you get older though, one may have a better understanding of what they like and expect, but then your points could still prove valid even then. Nothing worse than diving into someone else s "foxhole", just to find out it isnt deep enough:shocked::D ( I know, bad analogy )
