I'm definitely going to drive one when they come out. I usually get reg cabs but it seems they will all be ext or crew cabs.

I didn't realize the engines will be built in Thailand. I don't know why that rubs me the wrong way, but it does. On the other hand I have a lawn mower with a Kubota diesel, and am currently looking to add another one to my barn. So import diesels shouldn't seem like a weakness.

GM forever taking the cheap way out. Nothing learned from the initial V8 debacle in the 70's?
those were gas engine designs that had to cope with double the compression (= piston pressure) once converted to Diesel, with not enough headbolts to keep them on. The Isuzu I4 is a purpose built 4 cylinder, given its only a light duty truck this engine has plenty of reserve to outlast the truck. Well, thats if American trucks are the same quality as the American cars they sell in Europe... ;)

The Honda GX390 in my powerwasher was built in Thailand also. The fit, finish and performance have been remarkable.
I think Thailand is becoming a high quality manufacturing base, and offers a stability that allows major investments.
I'm not aware of any native Thai engine manufacturers or vehicle makers either so I'm assuming it's all outside investment building plants there.

I'll never be able to lounge on the beach at Phuket, but hopefully some of you will...

We are so traditionally provincial in our outlook towards world engines, there are gazillions of Iveco and Isuzu and... engines out there in all those little cabover delivery trucks. Mitsubishi Fuso too. They all seem to be diesel from my observation. And the little four cylinder diesel in my Case IH all American red tractor is a Mitsubishi too...
they're everywhere...

If the diesel Colorado get 30MPG it is not going to be worth it. Full size trucks are getting mid 20's now.

Did I miss something, or is that a Spoiler Alert ? :) Rgds, D.
When I left Ft. Wayne Assembly, we had launched production 14 1/2 ton Silverado's and Sierra's. It was heavily rumored that the half ton would see the 4.5 D-Max in future production. The problem is EPA regulations. Auto makers here in the states are heavily regulated on the number of diesels produced in the truck segment. The 1/2 ton truck is the number one seller for GM, Ford, and Ram. This will heavily limit the number of diesels produced IF it ever makes it's way into the half ton segment. We did build a Chevy Suburban concept with the 4.5L D-Max. It did spark a lot of interest with the public. http://www.leftlanenews.com/sema-live-chevrolet-melds-suburban-diesel-hd-pickup.html

The government/ EPA is trying to ruin the diesel engine. They don't want them too efficient.

How many thousands of $$$ are the fans of diesel mini trucks going to save? It's 2014, not 1985.

To answer the question directly - something like $15k Canadian off list price would be my guesstimate - versus the 3/4 ton diesels us peasants are currently allowed to Pay Tribute for.

The present quasi-prohibition we have here on diesels is mostly due to high level business maneuvering, and has little/nothing to due with pollution. (I'd invite anyone who seriously disagrees with that statement to stand next to an idling "modern" diesel while it goes through a Regen cycle, then get back to me).

I'd say a better question to ask is "How much money should we be able to save, with a stripped down, low cost compact diesel pickup" - both initial purchase price and operating cost could be significantly lower than anything upcoming that we will be Allowed to Pay Tribute For.

My 4cyl Ranger averages 25mpg in the summer while my v8 full size averages 16.5mpg. I would be happy with a truck that is slotted in between the two with that 3.6L v6.
