As I sit here watching the sleet and freezing rain fall I got to thinking about the things we all buy but hope we never need or use. The first thing that comes to my mind is an emergency generator. I junked my little Chinese made one this summer after screwing it up myself. It paid for itself by running continuously for two weeks in 2009. I nearly bought another one this summer but didn't because SWMBO said it had to be electric start were she could handle it. Too much money I thought. Now I'm for sure getting one as soon as I return the borrowed one sitting in my truck.

So an emergency generator is #1.

#2 is an Air Evac membership. This is the helicopter ambulance service that serves most Midwest and Southeastern states. I buy a family membership for both my daughter's families each year too.

#3 is the 12-guage sitting behind the door in the bedroom. It is configured strictly for home defense with lights, shell holders, etc..

#4 is any fire extinguisher.

#5 is the Concealed Carry License.

Good emergency kit. We've a whole house (12.5 kw with load management in the 200 amp box) diesel generator.

Once bought a Gravely that came with a bunch of attachments. One was an old square chute snow blower for one of his older Gravelys that he had at one point. Figured I'd never use it. However, along came a 7" or so sleet storm IN JUNE here in Virginia. My snow plow wouldn't touch that heavy stuff. Put on the ole square chuter. Must have been about 30 years old. However, that sucker bit down into that sleet and threw it about 70 feet away.
