You're my hero, going out upright and breathing! I'm counting down, 4 months and 12 days. I work for the Federal government and personally know 7 people who are or will be gone by 3 January.

Ah...us retired folks dont like to be referred to as "gone"! Seriously, congrats Mike! Well done!

I created a poster-sized calendar to mark off each of the last 365 days of my employment.:)

Thanks to all! I know several guys who have retried from the refinery and they all agree it is the best thing they ever did. As I was making rounds saying good-byes, several guys wished me luck. I replied I wish you luck as you are still here and I made it out the other end alive!:D Of course now I have to honor the promise I made to paint the living room. Oh well, with January almost upon us, I can recall much worse things I used to being doing!

Yeah, me too... only about 35 years or so! that's assuming the retirement age isn't up to 75 by then!

Congratulations man!

Congratulations on making it out of the refinery alive. NOW get a hobby or something that will keep you active or you may be like a lot of retirees who drop dead a year after retiring due mostly to inactivity. This was the major reason that I elected early retirement, I didn't care to work till I was dead or almost there.

Retirement age is actually whenever you feel you have saved enough money to live the rest of your life and really has nothing to do with government regulations unless you actually work for the government and want the gimme money at the end. I retired a few months short of 62 after 45 years in the heavy construction industry and have not regretted it one bit. I do kinda look forward to getting medicare insurance though as medical is a big expense for early retirees. I stay busy working my tractors on my mini-farm and helping others with chores, basically anything that gets me out of the house. The best thing about retirement is that you can take a break at any time, not have to fuss with things when the weather is inclement if you don't want to. Basically live without a clock or calendar. You do (or should) try to remember the wifes birthday, anniversary etc if you value your tranquility.

Steve

The last year I was at work I had a big countdown timer running on my computer screen. After the boss walked by a few times, I realized that maybe it wasn't such a great idea.
