Simple use electricity for heat wen LP is that expensive.

Gotta wonder how much that would stress the powergrid? I know A/C can really stress it in some areas during the summer months... if everyone runs out and buys electric heaters...

where is the best place to purchase a 1000 gal tank? we have a 500 gal rental but I need about 800 gal a yr so we always get a fill in jan at the high price because we cant make it through the winter. my supplier is trying to make us go monthly or charge a low use fee. I am thinkingI will just buy a 1000 gal tank and fill during the summer and tel them to pack sand

Don't get rid of the tank you have, rather add another 500 gal tank. They connect together just fine and will save you bucks.

Colder the better for transformers and powerlines. Colder conductors have less resistance. Plus the cold weather cools overloaded components more effectively.
Powerplants with steam turbines make more power with the same amount of steam with colder condensers. Increases the delta P across the LP turbines.

Yes and no?Being a electric lineman I can tell you cold weather can be hard on conductors and transformers also.I seen were lines just snap from being to cold.

How many people actually know the break even point when LP becomes more expensive that electricity?

I know my break even point. Others may be different. Propane and electric rates arent the same across the nation.

1Kwh = 3412 BTU

My electric rate is 0.12

So, $100 buys me 833 Kwh = ~2.8 million BTU

Which is equal to 31.17 gallons of propane. So my break even point is ~$3.21

IF we factor a 90% efficient furnace, I need 34.62 gallons of propane. Break even would be $2.88/ gallon.

The 500 gallon tank is a rental. The supplier is trying to make them go monthly or charge a low use fee. If the OP simply buys a tank then he no longer has these problems--he can simply get quotes from multiple suppliers in the summer and choose the cheapest one.

One place to buy a tank is to get a used one--Craiglist, etc. As to where to buy a new tank does anyone have any thoughts? Most suppliers only want to rent tanks, not sell them.

I am sure that normal ambient temperatures have little or no effect on conductor conductivity. Especially at transmisssion voltages. It comes into play when you are talking chryrogenic (sp?) temperatures.

We have a shortage here in eastern Ontario as well.
You're not alone...we're stuck with the same problem.
Propane @ +1$ a liter (1 US gallon = 3.78 liters) so do the math.
At least, I have a good supply of wood to compensate.
