My dog had a stroke yesterday

I've had pets for 35 years. My Vet says, if you have a pet, take care of it, if you aren't willing to take care of it, don't have it. I agree.

I lost a dog I had for 16 years last Summer. She had arthritis so bad she couldn't get up on her own. My wife kept saying when are you going to end this and take her to the Vet. I helped her up when she needed to go outside to pee, helped her up when she needed a drink or to eat, did that for two months. Susie hated to go to the vet, would tremble and shake and be all stressed out the whole time. I said when the time is right. One day I was in the shop and Susie was laying on her rug. She was dreaming, running and barking, obviously having a great time. I went to the bathroom, got the .22 rifle and shot her while she dreamed. I told my Wife that she died in her sleep.

If you are going to have a pet, take care of it, if you aren't going to take care of it, don't have it. Death is a part of life. Hopefully when it's my time someone will allow me to go in a happy state.

Good luck with your pet. But remember, you are not in charge of whether it can recover or not. That's a power way beyond us.

I like to provide my cats with heated beds. I use heating pads, but heated beds are available. I know it sounds ridiculous for many, but I partly attribute having a cat live a life of 21 years to this, maybe fending off arthitus and such. Maybe I could suggest the same for the poor doggie patient!

ok so we get it. thanks too your very informative vet. If you have a pet, take care of it. if you aren't willing to, don't have it. Geez that's rocket science huh. More important about your post is that you give the amount of detail that you did. Good for you that your able to go grab your rifle and put one between the eyes of your dog. I don't think all that info belongs in this guys thread where his beloved dog gave him a scare but is recovering. Ever heard of too much info? You have had a a few dogs and lost a few woulda been sufficient.

Sorry if my bluntness offended you.

Rocket Science huh??? How bout the millions of pets that are chained up right now in freezing weather, no water, little food and sleeping on the cold ground?? It's not a given that pet owners will care for their pets.

My reference to my dog's situation is understood by pet owners that take care of their pets. And it certainly wasn't intended to persuade the OP to shoot his dog. He has displayed the dedication to his pet already that will guide him. And when the time comes for his pet's life to end he'll do everything he can for it to be quick and without stress to his pet.

He has been home for 2 1/2 days and his progress has been steady. He needs very little help in his front and has plenty of strength in his front legs. His back end has also showed good progress. He takes full strides when he is outside on the grass and stepping in the snow. It's almost like the cold footing may send a better signal to his head where his feet are ? He is able to get himself to stand and balance on his own now as well. And has managed to climb back up on the couch. :) :) Hopefully the progress continues as good as it has over the past few days.

My Son's Boxer had 4 strokes in her lifetime, spread over 3 years. Each a little worse and a little less recovery. If he's not displaying odd posture behavior, like head tilted, eyes crossed, walking in circles, etc., I think you'll be surprised how much he'll recover.

My old Dog Susie had a stroke about 3 months before she died. For 3 days she couldn't walk in a straight line. If she headed for the dog door to go outside she'd do circles to the left until she finally got there. Also held her head low and tilted to the left.

Oh yeah. Just laying there you'd never know he had a stroke. No unfocused eyes or abnormal expressions at all. He'll recover quick from this. May retain some small glitches, might be a bit unbalanced do certain things or something like that. Looks glad to be home!!!!
