Snowmageddon

I have about a foot here on top of the hill but it is already blowing and drifting so the low spots have a lot more. I plowed the first four inches off last night after supper and have opened it all up. I have about a half mile of private road to do with three houses on it. I've walked through the ten gallons of fuel I put in yesterday pushing the banks back to make room for drifts and have to go get more.

About 11am the snow stopped like someone closed the spigot. Went from steady snow to nothing.

We got around 11-12 inches. Sticky snow, the kind that hangs on the shovel, blower and bucket. It's heavy with moisture.

I didn't dig out the car that sits outside. That PITA ain't going to be there next winter, one way or another. We may get some flurries or an inch or two yet the next couple days.

I was able to get to our North farm on Thursday, but it had drifted so bad over the night the roads were completely impassable Friday morning. Headed North the road was drifted in 4' deep for about a 1/2mi, and 3' deep headed south for 1/4mi. I tried in vain to get a running start in my 4runner and make it out headed South:

Later that afternoon I dug out about 2' of snow through there and packed down the rest into a little 6' wide path. I made a test run in the 4runner and was able to get out. My wife and I headed out about 5:30 to go get more diesel and some food in town. We hadn't gotten as far as that blue mailbox before there was a truck coming the other way and had gotten stuck (my trail wasn't wide enough for a full size, and only went as far as my driveway anyways.) A few yanks with a tow strap and got him out and turned around. Got back from town at about 7:00 and there was another truck stuck in the same spot. This time it was our neighbor who was headed down to get one of his tractors. We gave him a ride, got his tractor, and got his truck dug/pulled out.

By this time a grader had come to try to plow the road. He was headed North and made it about 100' past my driveway before he was fully stuck in about 4' of snow. After some digging and yanking with the neighbors 4wd 5625 Deere we got the grader out. He had to back out almost 2mi to get to the main road as there was no where big enough for him to turn around. Sometime early this morning VDOT came through and dug the road out. I'm not sure what equipment they used, but the snow is piled 6-7' high along the sides of the road where it was drifted badly:

Indeed, I feel pretty fortunate though. I've been amazed at all the folks out there with snow shovels trying to dig out their driveways. I try to stop and help anyone I can with the tractor when I have it out.

We got 20" dumped on us after 8" Monday. Luckily we didn't get the 5-6" they were calling for last night.

Spent 4 hrs cleaning yesterday and took a pic from the snow mountain of my handiwork.

More loader work than blade yesterday.

Yes he has had it worse then I have and I'm used to it. ;) It helps if you have experience and have collected the equipment to see you through. Those people down in Georgia would muddle through just fine if they had seen it more then once or twice in a lifetime.
