How do you transport your gas bottles for refill?

I know acet needs to be verticals due to the other stuff in the tank. But why does propane need to be?

For transport, it doesn't. For use, you don't want to withdraw the liquid propane onto most regulators. Allthough there are some regulators that are heated, and made to use liquid propane on some forklifts, they aren't common elsewhere AFAIK.

If you're using propane for a cutting torch, you want it in gas form. Forklifts use liquid propane so that's why the tank can lay sideways. There are also big propane heating torches that work with liquid propane. They are used in things like tar pots for flat roofing.

Good question! You always see propane bottles horizontal on fork lifts, man lifts, etc.

Different kind of safety valve vs 20 lb or 100 lb tank. If you look, when the tank is properly installed on the fork truck the safety is not in the liquid propane. OSHA is BIG on looking to see if the tank is properly mounted. I know 90% are mounted wrong and nothing ever happens. If it does the lawyers and OSHA will be lining up for their cut.

The original question was how to properly secure the cylinders. As they say you can do anything you want on your last day.

I carry my 20lb propane tank in the front of the bed with a ratchet strap holding it.

I'm not sure but it might have something to do with whether it's used as a liquid, motor fuel, or if it is a gas, gas grills or stoves.

To be honest, I keep them laying down for transport in the back of my pickup...But I keep a couple of spare tires on rims partially inflated and use them to "wedge" the cylinders so the don't roll and scoot around. Works pretty well. Not enough to keep them from flying out in a wreck though...I don't know of much that would do that.

I've never filled my dad's tanks but I am going to have to do it soon...
The Oxygen and Acetylene tanks sit in a cart upright...
Pop always took them to his supplier in the cart strapped to the bed of the truck in an upright position...
Worked fine but took some grunt to lift them onto the truck bed...

I carried mine too and fro lying down, 25 mile's one way, 2 or 3 time's a year, in back of car, SUV, pickup, wheel barrel, since 1995, when I get back, with in 15-30 minutes had the gauges on and cutting, never waited over night before using, I usually spend all night trying to figure out why/how I spent so much $$ at the welding store on this that and the other thing, and then trying to justify it to my better half. My Acetylene tank stands about 3' high, Oxy tank stands about 4' high.

Acetylene should always stand up for at least a few hours before using so you don't draw the acetone out. If you draw the acetone out you can have too high of concentration of acetylene gas which could be very dangerous as the acetone stabilizes the acetylene above 15 PSI.

I cant believe I was doing it all wrong all these year's, this is gonna upset my whole world, I guess from now on, if I want to start cutting when I get home, I'll have to cut a hole in the car's trunk so I can stand it up right, of course, I'm not sure how to explain the hole in the trunk lid to my wife yet.

Sounds like acetylene gas is an unstable gas, know wonder shipyards don't use it anymore. Why does it take so long for acetylene to settle back down, is it lighter than air, is this the only cutting gas that take's a long time to settle down? I don't get it Big Dan.
