How is it that I can go online and see that Menards' has 36x96 ribbed steel panels for $16.66 each, but my local Lowes (in NJ) is selling basically the same panel (in galvanized, not even color) for $25.98!? I've checked a couple of lumberyards in my area and nobody stocks it or can seem to give me a price without having to pull a quote together for the entire building...and I live in the heart of NJ farm country-there are steel sided buildings everywhere. What gives?

The problem with tin is shipping because it is very easily damaged and there are limits to how many packs can be stacked and securely tied down. Being able to haul it yourself from a local source is as mentioned the way to go.

Assuming that you mean south Jersey by being in the heart of farm country, Fogelsville, Pa just west of Allentown would be a hike. Kistler Building in addition to erecting barns, sells wholesale and retail. They could order in some tin along with a regular shipment. You can find them online.

I have an Amish run tin shop about 15 minutes drive from me. Been awhile since I bought some tin but I will have to see if I have a price list laying around just for comparison sake.

Actually I'm in Northwest Jersey so Allentown is not a bad ride at all. South Jersey is often thought of as the more rural part of the state, but Hunterdon, Warren, and Sussex Counties in the Northwest actually contain most of the actively worked farmland in the state. Thanks for the tip!

In my case, the shipping was 100% flawless... and I was the last delivery (of 15 or 20) on the driver's week-long delivery run.

I cannot imagine trying to haul 16, 20 or 24' metal myself.

This was me right after I picked the load off the manufacturer's rig.

Everything was packed very nicely. Each trim profile was wrapped separately. My tins were protected by some scrap tins on the top.

As far as price that depends on the thickness. Most of the cheap stuff you see at Menards is 29 gauge which is thinner than 26 gauge (lower number= thicker). 26 resists hail better and allows you to span more distance between supports. Another thing to consider is the finish, there are premium finished with better warranties and even specialty finishes. Most of the cheap stuff can be bought for around $2 a ft _ or -. Small yards charge about $2.25 and menards will sell galvalume and white in the 1.60-.70 range on sale. The thicker metal is usually quite a bit more expensive, around $3 a ft.

Any competent lumber yard should be able to order metal to your specifications in 1-2 weeks max.

When I erected a 60 X 200 ft barn for a client the manufacturers fought to get the order and delivered it on site direct from the factory. I did name the lumber yard that got the credit (maybe commission) for the sale.
They also custom fabricated a soffit/facia 'special' that saved me tons of work to install.
The roof sections were darn close to 40" long but made a beautiful job. (we used rope and vicegrips to haul the roof sheets onto the rafters and simply laid 12' 2 x 6"s against the facia to prevent kinking of the sheets.) For nice placement we predrilled all the screw holes on the ground 5 sheets at a time.
All that was done in February at -25 deg. Brrrr.
Still have the Makita and batteries we used for that job.(2 drills and 3 chargers+4 batteries)

Careful, if word gets around you'll start a bidding war if your project is large enough.

How is it that I can go online and see that Menards' has ...

I've put up 3 buildings with Menard's steel and was happy with it. The trim pieces really drive up the cost. I saved a lot by using standard gutter and fascia trim instead of the roofing trims wherever possible. I used a beige color that happens to be close to the standard gutter/fascia trims. For example I bought standard roofing drip edge for both rake and fascia. I used gutter apron on the top edge of run-ins instead of buying the apron sold specifically for the panels. They sell adhesive backed foam that is priced out of this world to block the rain and snow from blowing in the ridge. I put a piece of sheet metal angle under the top edge of the panel so it blocked the wind, then foamed the pocket created after the ridge cap goes on with expanding foam. Probably saved $100 just doing that. I'd also shop online for better prices on screws, they cost a lot.
