Ok, I just bought this tractor and new post hole digger from Coldwater tractors. I have serviced the tractor and finished installing the auger up to the point where I need to slide the auger shaft onto the PTO shaft. Below are pics of the auger shaft and PTO shaft. I am a self admitted newbie and know basically nothing about tractors. I have looked at the manual and on line but cant seem to find any good pics on how its suppose to go on to the PTO shaft.

I have found OTHER brands that show an extension on the end of the auger shaft that has a pin that has to be held out while you slide it on and then push the spring loaded pin into place locking the shaft. I dont see anything on this auger shaft for this. AM I MISSING PARTS? Do I need to buy something else or should it have come with the post hole digger is it it something that I have to buy for the PTO end?

I was hoping to get to some post holes today for my fencing.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

That should work. The style pto shaft you have uses a ball to lock it in place instead of the sliding pin you are familiar with. You need to either pull or push the outer collar on the end of the shaft as you slide it in. It is spring loaded. I believe you pull the collar away from the tractor as you slide it over the shaft, but some may be push.

YEP, THAT WAS IT, my wife actually looked at it and said the same thing before I got this reply. I had to pull that colar out and slide it on and it clicked. simple. Thanks for the reply.

ALSO BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN RUNNING A PHD ITS 1 OF THE MOST ATTACHMENTS ON A TRACTOR THAT HAS MAMED OR FLAT OUT KILLED THE MOST PEOPLE. Might want to do a TBN search here on safety and also see The Everything Attachment Video's !!!!!!!!!! Play safe !!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks and I will try and retain my man card. Yes it was shipped empty. I filled it and greased the fittings too. I just did approx 30 post holes in a flash. Great piece as this is heavy heavy clay. what makes for a great pond, makes for hard digging with a shovel. This things worked great.

I understand the danger part. I just retired from 30 years of police work. One of the first coroner cases I handled was a guy who got caught up in one on an old tractor. That vision will make you careful the rest of your life. I also not big into getting a horse after seeing open heart massage preformed on a rodeo queen- last ditch effort, included spreading breaking ribs. We now have 175 acres and the wife is talking a horse. And im like----UH NO, not for me.

Thanks to everyone for the assistance, great site. My first post hole tractor use day was a success. AND I didnt have to spend 25K on a new tractor to do it.

I know the pics are small, but here is a couple my post holes. Im eventually going to put a home down by this pond. For now I have a shop and my fifth wheel. Going to get a greenhouse in and garden, chicken coupe and large dog run area. This is going to help a ton, plus I have lots of fence to fix.

And yes, lots of deer and even some Elk. But with all the hunting within minutes I wont hunt on the pond, maybe up higher but I promised my wife that I would not shoot right on the pond its self. Plus by duck hunting buddies tell me once I start killing ducks and geese on the pond that they will leave.

Hey, since you are new to that Yanmar tractor, did it come with an overrun-clutch for the PTO? It not, get one ASAP before turning that auger anymore. Sure, the sheer pin is one safety device on the auger, but if it takes a few extra moments to sheer, you can ruin the PTO or worse someone can get injured.

Read up on the overrun-clutch for the PTO here....
Yanmar over running clutches

When drilling post holes with my YM2610, I still put the tractor in neutral and set the parking brake before engaging the PTO with the overrun-clutch installed. Only in a few rare post hole digging had I needed the tractor in gear to inch forward a little.

If your Yanmar has the multi-PTO speed selector, I run the auger in PTO selection #2 with the engine rpms lower. For some reason the auger works better without shaking the tractor wildly and the engine hums along. Yes, that would mean the PTO is spinning a little fast, but the engine speed is tamed down to the point it's similar to the 540rpm needed. My tractor needs 2200rpm engine speed to be in the 540 PTO selection #1. At PTO selection #2 at 1800 rpm, things are much smoother.

Thanks for the advise. I have no idea if it has such a clutch but if they are extra then I doubt it. I did hear about the overrun clutches for mowing, I had no idea I would need one for the auger. What do they cost to have installed? Probably not in my budget. So if I CANT afford to add one now, I guess I should just be careful and use the gearing you suggested? Im digging in wet clay currently and staying away from rocks.

They are about $64USD + shipping. They install easy just like a screwing in a light bulb. 10 seconds. It will take you longer to remove the overrun clutch part from the shipping box vs. installing one. The good thing other than the safety is the fact that the PTO access works even better since the connection to the implements is now 8-inches farther out from the tractor, but still in the PTO shielded area. :)
