PLEASE! Put the firehouse next door to me. My fire insurance would definitely go down.

Some idiot is always trying to stop something from happening for no good reason or even having a reason. They just want to oppose anything that civic authorities propose regardless of what it is. This idiocy ties up or judicial system that could be judging criminal or real civil cases.

Same people do not want above ground hydro lines, wind mills but demand free bicycle paths all without any tax increases.
Bicyclists want 12 month snow free paths, object to helmet laws, and refuse to pay any fees or taxes.

They are always welcome to open next to us.

Sorta OT but it does point up the "unintended cosequences". I worked in the county Jail - shift supervisor. It was direction across the street from the fire station. City rebuilt the old street between us and as an added bonus made a "water feature" right in front of city hall. Firestation was behind city hall. Fire crew access to thejail wasout of the doors, turn right 1/2 block and into the jail.

Not any more. the water feature and associated parking spaces stick out too far to allow those trucks a right turn. They now have to go completely around the block. Was a fine time I had the night I had a fire in thejail and had to evacuate the inmates. I was almost done with the evac before the first fire crew got there. Fire turned out to be a dryer that overheated. Massive water damage as all the sprinklers operated.

Well...since I am deaf, the noise wouldn't bother me, and because my last name is Burns...you figure out why I would welcome a fire station next door...

Seems that you and I have at least two things in common with each other!

Those idiots in the condos are a good example of one thing that is becoming all too common, "it's all about me, and I don't want it, therefore it doesn't need to be there"

IIRC, our homeowner's insurance is higher because we're so far from the nearest (rural, all-volunteer) fire station. A compromise I'm happy to make for living out in the boonies with no close neighbors.

If I lived in a rabbit warren, apartment building or condo (all pretty much the same thing IMO) I'd be happy the first responders were so close since there's no control of what's going on in the next unit at any given time.

You make an excellent point, one I didn't think of. One of the issues that puzzles me about the condo dwellers is that odds are, NONE of them are going to be much aware of the firehouse UNLESS they are subjected to the siren noise. Condo and apartment dwellers almost never do anything outside their abodes, they don't have yard care, landscaping, snow removal, etc. They cannot wash their cars in the driveways, don't have to maintain the property in any way, etc. I am VERY sure that an arrangement can be made between the authorities and the condo dwellers that the sirens on the equipment will not be used until the trucks are on the main street. So...what is their complaint?

Where I work and where I live are both between two firehouses each. 24 hours a day of sirens is a bit much.

The Condo Commandos don't like the noise and they would complain about the higher insurance rates if their was not a fire station nearby. Our county Fire Marshal went around the county getting agreements with land owners with ponds to allow the FD/VFDs to use the ponds to supply fire fighting water. The ponds are marked by a sign on a road. This lowered many people's fire insurance across the county. We are lucky that we are kinda close to town and an emergency response would not take long at all. Many homes will burn to the ground before an engine arrives.

I hope the Condo Commandos do not need EMTs... You know they will complain if someone has a heart attack and dies because the response time was not in seconds....

Later,
Dan
