all snakes are beneficial...even the venomous ones...better to be judicious and re-locate the dangerous ones than eliminate...

There is a balance in nature that humans are sometimes just incapable of comprehending...

I can respect your views on nature however there are some things on this earth that I can't share the air with where I live. Deadly snakes, deadly spiders and wasps.

The pattern spreads about an inch per foot of distance so anything over 10' or so would start getting iffy. The blue is the visible portion of a Speer shot capsule. They are two part: the capule is a tube with one end open that you fill with shot (roughly 109 grains worth) and is prescored on the closed end to help with consistant fracturing when fired; the cap that you snap in to seal the tube also acts as the wad for the load.

The capsule assembly extends a bit more then halfway down the brass when seated with maybe a third of the shot column visible. The .38 caliber variety comes 50 to the box, .44 & .45 come 25 to the box. The .38 box I bought from Midway was a bit less than $8.

Is there a 40 s&w load?

The critters and I struck a deal when we moved into this place 40 years ago; and it is thus: If you are a wasp, venomous spider or venomous snake, stay out of my house, yard, garden and shop and you will be OK. Come into any of the forbidden areas and you are dead meat if I catch you. Other critters...like racoons, possums and deer are welcome (some...like skunks...are only tolerated) as long as you behave yourself. If you are a squirrel, don't cut my tomatoes. If you are a gopher, there is zero tolerance.

A few years back, my little Boston Terrier was bitten by a Copperhead in our back yard. He was one sick little puppy, but he survived. He stayed overnight at the Vet's, but looked like he had a really bad tooth; his jaw was swelled for several days. I keep my yard trimmed and mowed, so we really don't have a problem with snakes of any kind.

CCI did have a shotshell .40 s&w in their lineup, don't know if they are still available. They were about $15 for a 10 round package. They use a specially formed case to facilitate chambering, like the .45 acp version.

Thanks! But at $14.00 for 10 rounds, looks like I will be keeping the old shovel handy :)

Yep shovel is cheap, multipurpose, and re-usable! But not as handy to carry as a pistol or revolver.

Our female Boston came in one day with the side of her head about the size of a baseball. We're thinking a wasp got her. She hated them as much as I do :)

Yep, no doubt. I have such a fear of snakes that I've actually fainted when startled by a rattler when I was working in the oil field. If I can identify a snake, I'm ok, if not, I go into the fight or flight mode :)

Unfortunately I haven't seen any for 40 s&w. I have seen .22LR .22 Magnum, .45acp and 9mm loaded ammunition. and the Speer "roll your own" like was shown by the OP come in 38/357 .44 and .45 Colt.

WHOOPS I lied,, here are some

CCI Shotshell Ammo 40 S&W 88 Grains #9 Shot Box of 10
I see out of stock and no back order which is understandable at $1.42 per round. That is more in line with a high caliber rifle match round.
For a snake gun, I would get the Judge pistol in 45 long colt and shoot .410 shells in it. Those shot shells I think are basically for revolvers rather than semi-autos and even if you found them, they may not feed or cycle well in a semi-auto.
