Older one will be home for 10 days, then off to Madrid for 6 weeks to study abroad.
Little one is 16 with learner's permit... stay off the roads!!! She's going to DC for a youth summit on the enviroment for a week. First time we won't have kids in the house in 21 years.
I just quit my job in I.T. after 27 years and took a night time mechanic/technician job in our maintenance department. That's what I originally did when I started here. That's how I got into I.T. Computers were machines and needed to be repaired and maintained. Motors, controllers, power supplies, etc... Everything in I.T. is changine so rapidly.... applications and systems are either going to the cloud or to corporate. All servers are being virtualized. They don't need hardware guys anymore in I.T. I am installing the systems that are replacing me. I can do software very well, but it is extremely boring to me as you can't put your hands on it. Soooo..... back to turning wrenches and re-learning electric motor drives. On the bright side, I'll be home during the day with my youngest, and I've been making dinner for the wife and kid before leaving for work. In a coulple weeks, I'll be on a schedule where I can eat dinner with them before going to work.
I look at it this way... in less than two years I'll be able to take early retirement if forced to. If my job stays, I stay. If it goes, I'll have two years of current maintenance experience and there are always maintenance postions in factories all over this area. Little one will go to college in two years as well. Wife's mom and dad are getting elderly. Don't need our care right now, but I see us helping them more in the near future, so I'll be home during the day and wife will be home during the night if needed. And I get to keep my benefits for now, so 28 days off still! I will be going from salary back to hourly, and there is a significant cut in pay. However, there's also a significant cut in hours.... I'll only be working 40 a week instead of 54! So that's another 14 hours a week at home, which is huge!!! Maybe I'll be able to finish that backhoe I started so long ago~
