For some reason, a lot of people think cats are "cold" and "standoffish" and never show love for their owners, and I suppose this is true in some, perhaps many instances but I can assure you if the cat is well socialized to its "family" they are as warm, loving creatures as any dog.
People who don't 'get' cats have simply never fed one. Cats have no use for anyone who isn't responsible to feed them. Volunteer to feed the neighbor's cat while they are on vacation and you suddenly have a new loving friend. At least until neighbor returns, then you are again useless to that cat and he will avoid you. BTDT many times - for our neighbor and her various cats over many years. (And she for our kids' cats, back in the day). If you haven't experienced this, you likely think cats have no ability to become friends. They can, its just different than how humans think.

But I agree, that boy's cat is totally devoted to the him and his safety. Some cats are loving and protective like that. Clearly each is 'family' in the other's eyes.

As for the poster who said his dog would have killed that cat - I wonder if his dog would have then gone right back to maiming the kid.

Wow that cat WAS loyal to that kid no doubt.
I hope that dog gets put down. No use for a dog like that around the neighborhood for sure! Lucky for the kid the cat was there:)

The dog will be destroyed but the boy's parents have opted not to sue the owners and only asked for the deductible on their insurance policy.

That cat is now all over the internet and made TV news, the owners have had all kinds of offers from magazines and pet food companies

If this thread gets long enough I expect some posters will come along to enlighten us all on how cats are natural born killers and a threat to wildlife or how they get their kicks out of shooting feral cats.

 I was wondering the same thing.

The dog chewed on the kid pretty good in the 2 seconds of opportunity it had to do so, and it bit the mother also when she ran around the other side of the SUV to confront it. It was a good thing the kitty got the dog off of the little boy as soon as it did or the kid could have been a lot worse off.

We now have a cat. Picked it up for free at the feed store when it was 6 weeks old. It was headed for the pound if nobody took him home.
Always had big dogs until we eventually went to small dogs – got two Toy Rat Terriers; 5# & 7#. The cat, Cooper (named after the feed store name) in 1 year has grown from a 1# kitten to a 13# cougar. He comes in at night to sleep in the comfort of the a/c, but during the day he hunts. Brings us birds, frogs, snakes, lizards and insects. Yeah, that’s just great! (NOT)
The dogs gave Cooper pure H*ll for the first 6 months. Then he realized that he was bigger and badder than both dogs put together. Now when he comes in he either simply ignores the dogs yapping or slaps them across the room, and goes on about his business.
We’re hoping that we’re just about through being trained on cats, but I doubt it. So far when I give him commands like Sit, Stay, Come, Fetch, etc. – he just looks at me like I’m crazy, and goes on about whatever he wants to do.

We had a cat that liked to play fetch. Most cats like for you to throw their toys and they will either catch them or pounce on the when they hit the floor, but this one would actually bring the toy back over and over for you to throw.. Not too many cats will do that, but it is pretty neat.

The dog I referred to, I knew of, and was around the dog, but wasn't mine. He would have destroyed the cat....but would have protected the child to his death. The dog was a very gentle dog around people....but it had intolerance to any 4 legged creature that messed with it. The dog knew no pain, and once took down a full size mule. The dog was was eventually dispatch for fear it was going to kill horses.

Most every dog will not mess with the cat, and let it have it's way. A cat can bluff it's way with almost all of them. But if the mood strikes the dog right, the cat is gone.
