Hey all,

I had been looking for a headset that I could wear on my tractor and in my skid steer to reduce the noise impact on my ears. Also so I could listen to Audible books and tunes while working. Ideally the headset would use active noise reduction (ANR) technology and would connect wirelessly with my Iphone so that I could listen to books or tunes and make and receive calls in a high noise environment. I checked the noise level in the cab on my TN70D. At idle it was 80db. Mowing with the engine running at PTO speed it was 91db. (I have a db meter app on my Iphone:D).

I had been using earbuds but that was a poor answer for me as it did nothing for the noise and I couldn't keep the ear buds in my ears while bouncing through the field:mad:. Next I bought a set of over the ear stereo headphones by Skullcandy. These stayed on my head ok but did little to reduce the noise and the cord was always in the way. I gave them a good test while mowing 50 acres. They were ok but not great. I searched the internet and found a set that met all my criteria but cost $900.00:eek:.

I had been eyeballing the 3M Tekk headset with built in AM/FM radio for a while but it was not cordless. It occurred to me that I might be able to attach a small Bluetooth adapter to them so that I could use them wirelessly. I ordered them from Amazon Wednesday and got them Friday night. The Bluetooth adapter is a Bluegate Go Groove receiver. The adapter is small, light with a 3 cord and an internal rechargeable battery. The headset was $40 and the adapter was $25 with free shipping.

This morning I took them on a small mowing job to give them a test run. The Tekk headset claims a 24db reduction in ambient noise and I believe them. Wow, it was much quieter. I could still hear and feel the tractor running but the difference was amazing. The Bluetooth adapter connected flawlessly and I was able to listen to my audio book with ease. No cords to tangle (I attached the adapter to one of the headset cups with a small piece of velco).

While this is not the perfect solution (I still don't have 2 way communication with my Iphone) it seems to work very well. The price is very affordable for me. The headset seems to be well built to last in a tough environment.

Nice, I've been thinking about something similar for quite a while

I've been using the Worktunes headsets for several years, but with the hard wire hookup to my iPhone, for audio books and podcasts. Rarely had them unplug on me, and I just keep the phone in my chest pocket of my coveralls or shirt.

I thought about bluetooth, but haven't seen an adapter low enough in price to make the jump, having virtually no issues with the cord. I'll keep an eye on those one-day-sale sites though, since you're so happy with that system!

I tried some active noise reduction ones from Sportsman's Guide, but they didn't have the full outer shell of the Worktunes, so they were less effective for me on the tractor, or with the chainsaw.

I use hard wired headset as well, mostly because Bluetooth uses so much more battery. If I'm active, I'll run the cord inside my shirt to keep it out of the way. Ten plus years of audiobooks via this method (used to carry a portable tape/CD player), and so far, so good.

Since the '80's I've been using a pair of Thunder 29's or equivalent with a good pair of earbuds jammed in the between the "cuff" that covers my ear and the insulation in the muff. Sometimes I would be using a tiny radio/mp3 player strapped to the Thunder's so cords didn't extend, lately I've a pair of Sony BT headphones I can strap to the Thunders. I've used things from cassette player to CD players hung on my hip and run the earphone line up under my shirt. I've used several phones with BT paired to BT headphones.

Lately my favorite combo is my Samsung Note 8 in my cargo pants pocket running BT to my headphones. Full fledged powerful computer in my pocket with all my tools, camera, recorder, note taking with handwriting recognition, E-reader, all my repair PDF's, network access, plus music player. Something I only dreamt of in the '80's.

At this time I've 3 or 4 pair of the Thunder earmuffs, some 20 years old. The plastic seems to harden and crack after about 15 to 20 years. I try to keep a pair near my MAJOR sound sources - One on the FEL lever, one at the sawmill, one with the chainsaws. This system has allowed me to have "flexible" sound sources, good earbuds and plenty of backup options.

And when I don't need the hearing protection I can just set the muffs aside.
