Are there any Compact Telehandlers down there? Elevating Expectations

Mine is rated for 7,000 pounds drawbar pull, and will lift over 5,000 pounds at the SSQA plate. At 6' wide, with 4 wheel steering it will get around trees and through the woods where a tractor can't go.

With the 7' brush hog.

The front axle is bolted solid to the frame and the rear axle pivots, so it isn't as "tippy" as a tractor with a FEL.

I have an MX5100 2wd geared model. I doubt mine would pull a 36" butt cut 50' long without a log arch. I would be awfully concerned with a back flip of the tractor if it did pull a log that big. I imagine it would handle 16' to 20' if I could get the end at the tractor off the ground without a log arch. I've pulled logs 20" at the butt and 30' long or so without much issue. In my case weight in the bucket makes a big difference.

Thanks again for the replies. You're giving me some very useful information.

I don't know if there are any compact telehandlers available down here. I'll have to check it out. That Bobcat of yours looks like a very capable machine. Quite impressive.

Yes, it is awesome.

And it is unstuckable.

Not stuck, just motion impaired!

Lowered the boom, that raised the front wheel out of the silt.

Extended the boom while backing up, got my motion back. :D

I dunno if this counts but I pushed this thing up onto a drop deck trailer with my MX5100HST. it had brakes locked on one axle. Machine didn't break a sweat.

G'Day from across the ditch Ian,

I cannot recommend enough a 3PH PTO-powered logging winch. They are still expensive in Aussie, and almost non-existent in NZ, but there are some fantastic models available in USA (where I bought mine) in particular. Far less potential damage to the tractor and with some snatch blocks you'll be very surprised at what they can drag. There's not much point putting a little tractor in rough or steep ground or trying to skid large logs directly. Far better off, for your own safety as well as the tractor's, with the winch.

Also, and I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but if you are skidding heavy stuff or towing heavy trailers up hills or suchlike, you may find HST gives up a little too much power than you'd like. But is sure would be nice for loader work.

I too am looking at the MX5100. Also on the radar is the Deadong/Kioti DK55 but I think they have replaced that with the NX series in Aussie.

3' DBH eucs may be worth milling (do you know what species?). Please put the kettle on, I'll be there in about 4 hrs....

Very good advice about the logging winch. The easiest and safest way to handle logs with the least wear and tear on the equipment - if your budget can cover the cost. A grapple for the FEL is also extremely useful. You've got it made if you have both.

As for HST power loss, once you're over perhaps 40hp, there is typically more power than traction with most compact frame tractors, regardless of which drive setup is used.

Guilty, your honor. :)

That's a good point regarding weight vs traction vs HP. I guess one could always add extra weight (if the ground isn't too soft) but it's kinda hard to add extra HP if needed. But then I guess the question becomes, is the extra HP ever going to be needed. Ian's case is a bit different from mine perhaps, but I could be towing trailers or working rolling to mildly steep hills and would rather not give up too much HP (at the wheels and PTO) to the HST and because the next week I might be in confined spaces, a bigger tractor isn't going to work out too well. So a bit of compromising needed.

HST would be wonderful when doing loader work (and there's a fair bit of that for me), but I worry the HP it gives up, in the little utility tractors I'm looking at, will push the tractor closer towards it's limits and for too long than I would like. If I'm wrong, wonderful, it would be an HST all the way because my left leg could do with a rest near the end of a day doing loader work.

I was concerned that this might be the case but my place is not steep, my tractor won't have to do any hill work. I think (hope) the advantages of a HST tractor outweigh the disadvantages.

I have never run out of power before I ran out of traction in any but the highest of three HST ranges.

Mirboo, IMO for non-ag use the tradeoff is gaining convenience at the sacrifice of a degree efficiency that may be difficult to quantify. (btw, my HSTs have only clutched to start or to engage/dis- the PTO)

The variety of tasks or how often I hitch & switch has got me somewhat enamored of using fewer limbs or fewer moves from day to day.

btw: When on the NH or TM, there are times when I really appreciate having one arm & one leg free to keep me from falling out of the seat. ... :confused3: ...
