Copperheads OH YEAH

I've posted these pics before. I took these while grading out a rocky hillside road last winter. There were a bunch more that I didn't get photos of. It was cold and they weren't moving too awful fast.

The new property owners were pretty surprised. They didn't realize that they would have snakes on the property.

I've noticed a lot of copperheads this year. I kill every one of them I see. I'll leave the bull snakes, rat snakes, etc alone. But death to the copperheads.

Wow Dennis just the pics give me the heebie jeebies.

Amazingly, I haven't seen any snakes yet on our place out west. Was out frog hunting around the tanks with my 8yr old and thought for sure we would kick one up but nope.

But we are overrun with Hogs and have heard they eat em so maybe that's it unless that's an urban legend.

Guess I'm wrong , they must not be federally protected but in Missouri and il it's illegal to kill snakes period! Unless they pose a threat ! My nieces husband is a warden and he's always harassing me! Not serious of course but things have definately changed in il! It's nearly communistic here! my cousin killed a big rattler ! Took it to a local coffee shop and showed some people, somehow the wardens got a song of it , came to his house and arrested him, got a huge fine. I know it's crazy but it happened .

I control burn, not only my yard, but also my woods surrounding my house every year. I also yanked most all of my bushes in my yard. If a snake had been around here I haven't seen one in several years.

Over 40 years ago as a young boy and teen growing up in Miami,FL . I use to go on occasion an see Bill Haast tangle with some pretty dangerous snakes. He was director of what was once the 'Miami Serpentatarium".

the snake caught in electric fence is from a ranch in Africa.

For copperhead, rattlesnakes, and cottonmouth bites we use Crofab antivenom which is the only one that is FDA approved for use in the USA. When and how much is based on the severity of symptoms. All cause tissue damage. Rattlesnakes also cause problems with the blood thinning so their bites tend to be worse. Antibiotics are usually not needed as most bites don't get infected. Crofab is not used on coral snake bites as their venom is a neurotoxin. All of the USA made antivenom has expired and the Mexico made is not approved for use in the USA. Treatment is pretty much symptomatic. If you quit breathing you get intubated and put on a ventilator. It's a myth that coral snakes do not have fangs and have to chew to inject venom. Coral snakes do have fangs, they are just smaller than the pit vipers. They can bite and a scrape from a fang will cause envenomation. This link is to the Miami-Dade Venom One unit list of antivenoms and what species they cover. Crofab is made using sheep instead of horses. There is very little incidence of allergic reaction like there was with the old horse serum. http://www.miamidade.gov/fire/library/antivenom-species-covered.pdf
So it's all expired? What are they using then?

Think of a snake's head as a loaded syringe. The fangs are needles and the venom sac is the plunger. Everyone wants to see and play with the dead snake and yes, some people bring in the live snake. One squeeze of the head and the venom comes out the end of the fang. Many incidents of envenomation happen by playing with a dead snake. The venom stays potent for years after the snake is dead.

Randy-- Ain't goin' to be any playing around with dead snakes around here. After he's really, really dead he is disposed of using a rake or hoe for transportation.

The snake Dad took to ER was about 20 years ago and Dad was old school back then.
