Dry DOG Food ???

   / Dry DOG Food ??? #51
If we decide to change dog foods, we slowly blend the new in with the "old" over a period of time until the "old" is phased out. We only make a change if we feel that a change is needed say to reduce weight or maybe improve the coat, or some other health reason.

we have AKC labs.

1 is 12 yo
1 is 10 yo
1 is 7 months

12yo and 10yo were 75lbs in there prime, now at about 83lbs.

For about 7 years we fed purina one large breed adult. Now we feed purina one lamb and rice that we can get at sams in a 44lb bag for $38 They both get 1.33 (measured) cups of food twice a day (2.66 cups per day total)

The puppy eats the same although he is currently at 4 cups per day and as he grows for the next 6 months we will slowly back him down as he reaches full weight. He weighs 50lbs now and expect him to reach the 80lb+- mark.

NOTE: in addtion to the above our 10yo boy likes baby bunnies. (the original squeaky toy) So when he can find them and they are "in season" he may get a few of those added to his diet. The puppy also likes bunnies, and also is willing to eat the dead mice the barn cats kill but wont eat. (go figure) They get a dog cookie every night before bed. Above 85lbs they get put on the green bean diet.

You may be interested in the ratings of the content of Purina products (other highly advertised foods as well). Go through the sites linked in this thread and decide if you really want to use such products. It is eye-opening.

Here is one site's review of all Purina products. Choose the one you use and see what they say about it.

I keep reading the posts & the more I read the more confused I get. So some questions.

Why raw meat & bones instead of cooked???
How do you prepare the vegetables??? Steamed or???
Apples & fruit, cooked????
Add a multi vitamin????
Any thing wrong with canned meat, fish or vegetables??
Why are corn, grain & wheat bad for a dog???

The last few days I have been adding a 1/4 pound raw burger to their diet. & Some frozen deboned chicken.
Seams to make them actually eat more. ???

Tried a baked potato, with fake gravy & small girl loved it. Put some fake gravy on their food & they liked that.

Possibly more questions???

Here are two links, there are many others. Google "BARF diet"
The Original Top 50 BARF FAQs for Beginners - BARF: A Bones and Raw Food Diet for Dogs

Raw feeding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "BARF" diet, an acronym for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food was created by Billinghurst. The acronym was coined by Debra Tripp. A typical BARF diet is made up of 60-80% of raw meaty bones (RMB), that is bones with about 50% meat,[16] (e.g. chicken neck, back and wings) and 20-40% of fruit and vegetables, offal, meat, eggs, or dairy foods.

Sharon is currently feeding our large dogs dehydrated commercial food (we add water let it set for about 20 minutes) plus a raw chicken drumstick and some raw chicken gizzards. The occasional can of pure pumpkin (not pie mix), raw beef liver, raw beef trimmings once in a while, cooked potato, cooked green beans and such. They eat twice a day.

Sharon buys the raw meat from a distributor that sells to stores and restaurants. 40 lb boxes of just about anything you would want, and cheaper and fresher than the grocery. A 40 lb block of hard frozen beef liver is hard to deal with unless you have a meat saw to chunk it up. Plus you need freezer space.

Dogs love things like whole beef ribs tend to have a lot of fat and be very rich. Beware of too much of those kinds of things, they can cause loose stools.
Fake gravy could be very salty.

In general, I think the dog diet thing can be overdone, but some of the foods would be like a human existing on bad hotdogs. You will live, maybe not as long or as with as much health. Your immune system health is tied to your overall health. A weak immune system is opening your body to more health problems. There are always exceptions in both directions, people or animals.

You ever see a coyote dragging a stove around?

Crash,
Cooked bones are definitely not good to feed dogs. The bones become brittle and will splinter when cooked. Then those bones are more like razor blades.
Where as raw bones remain a pliable piece the dog can readily handle internally.

Once a bone hangs around a day or two, say a large soup bone, I make it disappear. After a bone dries out they become just like cooked. Dangerous for a dog.
Then there's some known foods we eat that should not be fed to dogs period (not counting the heavy salt of your gravy stuff! lol)

from the above website
Fortunately, it is possible to make an educated guess as to the quality of a pet food. Until or unless the percentages of the ingredients are required to be shown on the ingredient lists or manufacturers disclose that information voluntarily, it can only ever be an educated guess or assessment, based on the knowledge that we do have.

so there "review" is simply and guess as to the quality. They do not indicate they do any specific reproducible scientific tests on the food. Without reproduceable testing method and reviews left to guess, I can not be assured that personal preferences are weighing ratings. In addition while they say they are not associated with any brand, they also don't indicate that they specifically don't take advertising money or "donations" from specific groups/companies which leads me to question the "independence" of there "guesses" that make up the reviews.

Victor brand, we buy it from Amazon. Our 2 dogs love it. My older dog has really leaned up and has more energy since switching. The 1 year old is a ball of energy. I'm not sure which color bag it is but it's the one that rates the highest at the food comparison sites. Good price for what you get. I did a ton of research before I settled on this one.

I feed my hunting dogs Show Time dog feed 24/20 (24% protein 20% fat) it's about $20 for a 50lb bag from the local feed mill, prior to that I fed Sunshine dog feed and never had a problem with it, just had to quit because of the price.
