boggen, I just copied somebody else, but they used dark red and it was hard to see. Was the rest of your post the way you reckoned these gas station (I try hard to us US expressions, but frequently fail) switches worked? I always thought they used electricity - but maybe DOH from me too.
*chuckles* i gave up on trying to remember the various "smileys" and emote icons. it takes to much time to remember and then if you forget and need to look the stuff up more time wasted. it has just became habit. of using * stars or brackets () or some other non letter / number icon. to distinguish that it is different that rest of the text. it may be bad grammar / english but *shrugs* hopefully ya get the idea.

most the time the DOH, is more of a "homer simpson" DOH! were homer did something, and just realized he goofed up.

I do not know how to use the smileys. I was not even sure about what DOH means, I just accepted it was a self recriminatory remark*. I have never seen The Simpsons, and cannot remember which is father and which is son.

* I sometimes surprise myself when phrases like that come into my head as I am typing.

This one gets decent reviews. Solar, electromagnetic, 1000' range, and not too pricey. Safety Technology International STI-34100 Solar Powered Wireless Driveway Monitor - Household Alarms And Detectors - Amazon.com

I have the $14 job from Harbor Freight and it works fine for me but I can look out the window to see what's up. I like the electromagnetic sensor idea for your application so you know for sure it's a vehicle.

Here's another solar device that may be helpful: Amazon.com: Sunforce 82156 60 LED Solar Motion Light: Automotive

<snip> Any suggestions are more than welcomed.
P.S. I also have a 1" x 12" x 12" plate ready to have spikes welded to it. Last resort though. Thanks again. RRM

Even with signs, it is illegal to booby trap your own property. Don't do it.

Are you saying that putting down spikes AND a large warning sign that there are spikes to prevent passage would be a booby trap?

I would think with a WARNING SIGN it would not meet the definition of a booby trap.

I was thinking of the spikes they put in rental agencies driveways to prevent you from backing up.

A booby trap is a device or setup that is intended to kill, harm or surprise a person, unknowingly triggered by the presence or actions of the victim.

But it would have to be placed so they couldn't drive around or steal it.

Another good deterrent might be Unexploded Ordinance signs.

we may be over thinking this ...

just install signs .. " property under video surveillance, trespassers will be prosecuted "

throw up a couple of dummy cameras up high out of reach ( and wires to look real )

and a few "Private, Keep out, no trespassing" in other places....

It might be different in the US, but in the countries where I have lived lots of signs and real or fake cameras etc. suggest there is something worth stealing behind all the notices. That just encourages the "better quality" thief, usually not operating alone, who will take what he can if nothing valuable is readily available.

I had, for a short while, considered some sort of alarm system on either my inner or outer gate. I have a mile long gravel driveway with no pull outs, turn arounds or wide spots. When you come thru the second inner gate the driveway dumps directly into my front yard. I can see neither gate from the house and I think the domestic and wild animals would be triggering most alarms all the time.

I have a single no trespassing sign on the outer gate and for the first couple years I took a VERY AGGRESSIVE approach to meeting uninvited guests.
This became known to all and after a while only those I know or who are invited will show up in my yard. I know what I did was legal because the state police had occasion to come and talk to me about this. I consider trespassing very serious and now the police and all in my area know I do also.

My property is very remote and there is absolutely no legitimate reason for uninvited or unknown people to show up in my yard.

Andy, I shipped my MURS back to Dakota, they wired it for free for an external 12v battery, lawn mower size. Bought a small 6"x6" solar panel and a small cheap controller to keep it charged. The only thing I have to do now is keep the ants out of the solar controller. They seem to like it for some reason. No more small battery issues.

So what is the crime? If you hadn't been told that those vehicles were there, how would you have known?
