Wood splitting, what do you do with your slag?

Depending on what you are splitting some of it may good for use in a smoker.
Use it for kindling & fire starters.
I use small chunks to fill in after putting big wood in the stove.

I use most of it for kindling and have tried some in the smoker also. The bark and what ever saw chips and raked into the bucket on loader and used to fill low spots.

Wood in low spots can act like a sponge and destabilized the ground. Esp if it gets beaten into the dirt.

My stove is pretty easy to light, I don't need much more than a small handful of slag/kindling at a time. Towards the end of the last heating season I had a lot of kindling leftover, some nights all I burned was slag so I could use it up. I figure it saved me some cordwood for this coming winter.

Kindling. The sheets of bark that sometimes come off get tossed in the woods except for the gray birch bark. That makes good kindling too.

The bark gets tossed on the floor of the wood shed, as a natural mulch. The other small stuff gets tossed into old milk crate-type containers, to be used for kindling.

We just bought one of those outdoor fire pits that you see at Lowes, and HD, and I have found that the small bits are nice for the last few minutes of "happy hour", when I don't intend to be out for long enough to throw more logs on the fire, but want a few more minutes of flames. Bear in mind I am in Florida, so the fires are not usually about warmth, just pyromania.

I noticed that with my SS splitter, I don't get the slag like I would with a hydro unit. It is a lot finer and tends to be stringy. Makes clean up easy as I just rake it in a small pile and toss it over the banking.

I like to burn everything I can for heat. We save anything that can burn or start a fire unless it's too small and a PIA.
