Massey Ferguson 4608L
I hope this finds everyone happy and healthy. As my area of expertise is livestock, not equipment, I find myself posing what is probably a really dumb question.

We just had a 2013 Massey Ferguson 4608L delivered on the 20th and, as they were unloading it, my husband noticed that one of the rear tires had some fairly deep cuts to the lugs. The sidewalls are fine and the tire isn't leaking (it's filled with some fluid of some sort). The tractor only has 93 hours on it and he looked it over 3 times but it was always parked on the cuts. Are these anything to worry about or should we ask the dealer about it?

I know this is a really dumb question, but if the tire isn't going to hold up, I need to know. And thank you all so much for the courtesy of a response. Now, if anyone wants to know the ins and outs of getting, and keeping, a 2B mare in foal, I'm more than happy to share.:laughing:

Cuts on the rear tire probably means that tire was driven on something sharp - like rocks. My rear tires are getting cuts all the time. I have nickel sized chunks cut out of the lugs. I had my previous tractor for 26 years with the same rear tires - cuts and all. When I traded it in the tires were still in good shape - no sun rot or checking. The way to keep tires good for an extended period is - keep the tractor parked under shelter. The sun - actually UV rays - will make short work of the tires.

Shallow cuts to the lugs will not shorten the life of the tire. I doubt the dealer would have provided a new tire even if it were noticed while still on his lot. I assume we are talking about cuts around one inch deep. Cuts going completely into the cord of the tire will cause premature failure. Talk to the dealer if the cuts go completely into the cord.

By the way(BTW) - welcome to TBN. And your question/concern is not dumb.

One of our IH forklifts had tire cuts so deep, you could slide your fingers in. But those tires never lost air. Until your tires go flat or the tube or fluid starts showing, Id run them.

What oosik said, cuts on the lugs of Ag or Industrial tires are no big thing, we have cuts on several of ours; sure not wort spending the money on replacing them, tractor tires are expensive.

Any pictures of these cuts?

Thank you, Everyone, so very much! It's such a relief to have experienced, helpful answers -- I can now tell my poor husband that he can stop worrying about his wife raking the dealer over the coals... I'm big on honesty and tend to expect the same. Now, that's a dumb thing.

And, Six Dogs, I have 12 rescues that sleep with us -- yes, go ahead and say it: Poor Husband! I keep asking him what he did to tick God off so much so that He stuck him with me...

Again, Thanks so very much! I hope life treats everyone kindly and stay safe on those tractors!

PS I'm off to help my blind, 90 year old mother kick tushy at a nursing home Bingo game and take my Dad to the doctor, so please don't be offended if I don't contribute/respond for a few days. Take Care!

Hi Everyone and Thanks so very much for the great ideas and support!!

Just thought I'd update... After reading the replies by experienced tractor owners, I decided to let the cut tire thing go. Then I went out to do chores and the tractor was sitting so I could actually look at it and realized it had 24 fairly deep cuts to the lugs. So my little mind said, on the one hand, far wiser than I have told me it doesn't matter. But the part of me that believes in honesty got a little ticked off.

Bad thing when I get that way. My late husband used to say one would think I'd been walking in tiger pooh, cause I get pretty 'confident'...

Anyway, I decided to write a polite, but firm, email to the salesman. I explained that I work very hard to practice full disclosure in all of my business practices and always a bit stunned when I find someone who doesn't. Also said I didn't buy a fairly new, 94 hours, tractor because I didn't want to be looking for parts, tires, etc. Plus, I thought the company had a better reputation for customer service...

Well, just thought I'd let you know, there is a new tire on order and they will be making a farm call and installing it when it arrives.

Just wanted to let you all know and thank you again for your wisdom and support. It's very much appreciated!!

Take care everyone, stay safe on those amazing machines and I truly hope life always treats you kindly!
