Supply and demand is part of it.

But spot price (wholesale price where propane is made) is only a very small amount of the actual cost to get propane to a customer.

Transporting it from the terminal, local distribution, Federal, state, and local taxes, Tank rentals many times, etc. It all adds up.

I found a pretty neat website that has pretty transparent pricing. (I have no idea where it is though)

Galway Co-op | Fuels4Less | Discount Propane, "Fuel Oil

If you use alot of propane and own your own tank, propane price is only $0.35 above spot.

Obviously you pay more if you use little, rent a tank, and are on a will call.

I think I paid $1.49 a gallon in September to fill our 500 gallon tank. That is their summer fill price and includes delivery.

I use this to follow the trend. There are several good charts and graphs in this site, and you can dive down to your states averages too.

Unless you own your tank, you're at the mercy of your supplier. Not all suppliers will fill customer-owned tanks, and as far as I know none will fill another company's tank. As others have noted volume of use makes a huge difference.

Of course the price is plunging. I made it plunge by replacing my propane dual fuel heat pump with a geothermal heat pump this past fall :confused2:
