I have no beef if people want to legally carry a handgun.
I think it is beyond reasonable to carry any gun cocked and loaded. it is simply inviting trouble.
I was a soldier in several war zones. I always carried an automatic pistol, A Browning, identical to a US .45 ACP, except it was a 9mm with a thirteen shot magazine. It was a single action weapon, carried in a web holster on my belt, with a lanyard.
Yes, I have fired it in anger at a human target(in combat in a war zone, in 1964.) I have been a weapons instructor, and a range safety officer, for all army small arms. I was an expert marksman for every year I was in uniform (30 years)
I never, ever carried a gun with a round in the chamber in a holster. I was never in a situation where that kind of a quick response was necessary to any threat. I could draw, rack (load) and cock my weapon as quickly as any situation would have required. Occassionally I carried my pistol drawn, cocked and loaded in my hand. but with the safety on except when actually confronting an enemy, when I would release the safety and kill his *** if necessary.

I state bluntly that carrying any handgun with a round in the chamber under the hammer is extremely dangerous.
If you live where such a threatening situation exists that you must carry a handgun cocked and loaded in a holster, I would get the hello out of there, if you can.

It is never reasonable in a civilized environment to carry a cocked and loaded weapon as a routine practice. A revolver is another question, because one usually loads all the cylinders, but then it must be cocked before firing, unless it is a double action weapon. Of course, Police and other such agencies have certain protocols that require werapons to have a round under the hammer when holstered or drawn. Poor bastids.

Guns are deadly enough in trained hands. Carrying charged weapon routinely, for a civilian, is stupid, dangerous, and may be illegal in some jurisdictions.

That is how I really feel, but then I am not stupid, paranoid, nor heroic. I don't have to be, I do not live in a ghetto.

Somebody wants to shoot you suddenly by surprise or ambush, on the street or anywhere else, even a loaded gun in a holster wont save your ***.
That is why it is stupid to carry that way.

I know that I am farting against thunder by posting my opinion, so thunder away. It will not change my opinion, nor a lot of other peoples opinions. Now I am going to shaddup..and go safely to bed, leaving my guns locked in a cabinet, unloaded. My big two big dogs stand guard here in the night. Some sumbitch comes without an invite will lose his huts to that dog, or to me. I was an army combat ranger, so I know some moves, without a gun. don't piss me off, ok.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

All in all though - it's not a stupid conversation. It's a conversation that comes with lots of varying opinions and that's OK. So without being politically correct I'd like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas season and an excellent year to come.

correct.. calling it a stupid conversation was in itself, a poorly served comment.

everyone has opinions, and everyone has different skill levels. if someone is incapable of safely carrying a cocked and locked gun, then by all means, i don't want them carrying if they are afraid of it or do not know how to handle it in a safe way.

I also don't keep my self defense guns 'safely locked away' while i sleep. I want them within arms reach to defend myself when my dog wakes me up to tell me he hears someone in the house.

as for freedom of speech...? not on a private forum... we are here with the permission of the person who owns this site.

I must, perforce, aqpologize for calling this thread a "stupid conversation" that was a judgemental error on my part, and it was bad manners. Sorry to offend.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all who celebrate this season.

PS..Check your firearms at the Canadian border, please. Short guns are not routinely allowed in Canada. We have no need of them here...not yet. Canada is pretty fussy about allowing criminals in, too, is why.

By the way. Guns are not permissible at the US border either, Did you know?. None, not any kind, by any person can be taken into the USA by a civilian.

jix - I think it is that way going in either direction. I would never try to bring a gun in to Canada - not if I wanted to get back home anytime soon unless it were for hunting and only after doing my homework first.

i agree. I believe there are methods to transfer hunting fire arms. As when crossing any border, even in the same country but different states, you find certain places with different laws. i have a carry permit, while there are plenty of states i can travel to with reciprocity to florida, there are some that don't, and i observe those rules when traveling. When in rome....

that said.. i usually don't travel to or thru non gun friendly places. no reason to leave a gun friendly place to travel to a non gun friendly place. ;)

Laws are constantly changing. In 1972, when we drove from Texas to Alaska, we were living in the travel trailer while a new house was being built in the Dallas area, so I had 3 handguns in the trailer. At the Canadian border, I was told to "bring them inside unloaded" which of course I did. They recorded the serial numbers and such, put all 3 in a very thick, but clear plastic bag with a waxed cord and lead seal to close it, gave me a copy of the document on which he'd just written the information, and told me to give it to the border guards when we left Canada. When I stopped at the guard house at the northern border, no one came outside so I took the bag with the guns and the form inside. The guy there looked at them and gave the bag with guns back to me. I had no reason to open the bag or take a gun out during the 9 days we stayed in Alaska, so we did the same thing coming back, except the guns stayed in the original bag coming back.

In 1991, we thought we might stay in Alaska permanently, and since handguns were no longer allowed to pass through Canada, I gave them to a Texas licensed gun dealer to send them to an Anchorage dealer and I picked them up in Anchorage when we got there. And when we decided to come back south that Fall instead of staying up there, I used the same two gun dealers to send the handguns back to Texas.
