I can't really complain about SS, I figure I'll come out far better than the following generations and was able to retire at a younger age than my kids, grand kids and so on.

You hit THAT ONE right on the head...I have two nephews in their mid-20's and my girlfriend has 3 kids ranging from 26 to 33...it's doubtful any of them will ever see much, if any of what they are mandated to contribute into Social Security. Do I feel they are getting the short end? Yes...but do I think I deserve my benefits? Heck yes...I was able to retire at age 51 because I was reasonably assured I was going to be able to collect what they said I would be able to.

Same way I planned my retirement and that I believe was the intent except the program has not been managed properly and retirement plans have been significantly changed by private companies as well as government positions. My youngest son just started with the same employer where I worked over thirty years and their retirement plan has changed significantly, so he can in no way plan a lifestyle such as I and my wife retiring at the same age.

Could be worse, know more than a few guys who worked for private companies and their pension fund went bust, no more pension checks, no more health benefits. There is supposed to be a Federal backstop to prevent this from happening; however, it doesn't always work out.

I would like to receive SS in the future but not counting on it. Also entitled to a Federal pension at age 62, not counting on that either. Boys in DC keep eyeing up SS, pension funds and the TSP money as additional sources of funding.

You don't say how old you are but my understanding is that you have to be at least 62 to collect SS benefits. I am a government retiree and after my first year I began collecting $25 per month additional or a flat $300 a year as a COL increase.

Not eligible for SS since I'm covered under a gov't pension unless I work enough quarters (40?) paying into SS and have enough recent quarters.

Meaning you didn't have to contribute to SS? Sorry if that is a stupid question....
