Well, I know what its not - not like any trees we have in this neck of the woods.

The bark looks like Elm.
The interior wood looks like locus.

Does the bark high on the trunk/up in the canopy get smooth and silvery compared to the section in the picture? My guess is cotton wood.

The wood seems very light compared to other wood I've cut so I was pretty suspicious while working on it.

The bark looks like cottonwood to me. In the spilt wood picture, the bark looks kind of thick and spongy, and the wood is light in color.

From the picture of the standing tree it looks like a cottonwood to me. I burn it but only in my syrup cooker, and only when split small and bone dry. It burns hot and fast, but it's not really worth the time to process unless you are cutting them out in favor of better species and also need lots of firewood.

I have not seen a piece of Ash in a long time, so I do not know.

Looks like basswood(cotton wood in some areas),no much good for firewood but it does burn.Good logs are used for moldings or carving.Straight grained and holds detail well.

Not ash or maple. I'm sticking with cottonwood. Could be a basswood, though, they are different trees.
