Yanmar FX32D
I'm a new member here, need to get a rototiller for my Yanmar FX32D. The tractor dealer said that the engine horsepower for this tractor is 38, while the PTO horsepower is 32. The selection of rototillers here on the island of Hawaii (the Big Island) is very limited. Gearmore is available, and possibly Land Pride.

A Gearmore dealer here recommeded the E60 tiller, but according to the manufacturer the tiller needs 40 H.P. That's close to the engine horsepower, but the PTO horsepower is much less than that. The tiller dealer says the Yanmar is perfectly able to run that tiller, but then he has two of these tillers in stock and nothing else. I'm thinking that I'll have to order a smaller tiller and wait for it to arrive. It would be nice to get a 60" wide tiller (the E60), because that's the width of the tractor, but maybe the tractor doesn't have enough horsepower for something of that size. Any suggestions?

Welcome!

Your model number (FX32D) indicates the horsepower (32) that can go out the pto to the tiller. I don't think I would exceed a tiller manufacturer's advice on minimum hp required, by very much.

This is based on my experience taking the tiller matched to my 20 hp Yanmar, and trying it on my 15 hp Yanmar (pto ratings). Your proportions of hp needed/available are similar. I have to use the optional 'training wheels' on the back of the tiller to prevent it from taking too deep a cut. Without those, it will stall the engine whenever the tractor's nose has to climb over uneven ground causing the rear of the tractor to dig in full depth. You don't want to spec a combination, and spend a lot of money, to run as near to overload as this.

You might phone Gearmore and ask if they are serious about their 40 hp minimum. Possibly that is worst-case in dry adobe or something.

One on the Gearmore pdf's shows 25 - 40hp required. http://www.gearmore.com/gearmore/files/ETillerBookRev.pdf Lots of factors to consider when using a tiller. Ground speed, tiller speed, depth, ground being tilled. All of those can have a bearing on required horse power. I think with a knowledgeable operator this tiller could work with the 32pto hp, at the same time I think you could probably bog your tractor down in certain scenarios.

Welcome to TBN!
I run a 5' behind a 26 PTO Hp tractor and rarely is it too much tiller, even in our clay soils.
It seems to me that you could run a 6'.
Lowest ground speed is a consideration - if you have HST, then speed shouldn't be a problem.
If you have a gear drive, then a minimum ground speed of 1 mph @ PTO RPM is good; slower is better.
If you rear tire track width is greater than 60", then give serious consideration to 6'.
It's really nice to have a tiller that's wider than your track!

I would go with the 60 and if your tractor hp is marginal, take off a row of tines and keep tilling. The soil condition will also determine how hard a roto tiller pulls. We stock the Tarter tillers, however, shipping to HI is rather pricey? Ken Sweet

Thanks to all who replied! It takes so long to order anything from the mainland that I may end up buying the Gearmore E60, which the dealer has in stock. The download link that Winston1 included does show a PTO horsepower range of 25-40 for the E60, whereas another download document from Gearmore (it's a product brochure, 'All Tillers') says 40 HP is required. I need to call them...

Ken, I'm in TN. Got some Tarter cattle coral panels last year. They work well. Are these Tarter tillers also the ones at TSC? I've been looking for a little while now here in Nashville.

I know zilch about tillers and own a YM1600. Suggestions

I believe a 1510 is 18hp. and your 1600 is 19hp. so this one should work. He's local so I would call and check if he may sell it or give you the model #etc. Yanmar YM1510D Tractor

I ended up getting the Gearmore E60, and it works fine with my tractor, a Yanmar FX32D.
