Should have read to the end. Thanks for the support Larry, James, Murph. :)

Nope...I like to know where any rounds fired are going to end up.
Frankly, firing a round upwards is pretty irresponsible since, depending on the caliber and angle upwards, it can travel quite a ways.
Firing into the ground...can't say I've ever done that unless the "ground" was part of the backstop.

If one has to do this, probably best to get some blanks or use a starter pistol. I'm sure most of you know this, but even blanks can do serious injury at short distances.

1. No.
2. Shooting guns at midnight doesn't make sense regardless of the date.
3. My hunting dogs are sensitive to shots.
4. Ten acre parcels are too close to be shooting.
5. Making noise in a quiet and serene country area is disrespectful, in my opinion, especially in the middle of the night.

You asked.

Thanks for the reply.

I didn't either, for some of the same reasons.

Next 4th of July I should post and ask how many folks shot off fireworks. I wonder what comments that will bring?

I did not know anything about Richard either until I read his post #60. I did read the whole thread though and note the pertinent posts below:-

Ovrszd #7 Having traveled all over the World to some not so nice places, I've saw this ritual followed a lot. I'm not opposed to it in the proper environment. I don't participate

Silvic #15 This is not a third world country and we are not (well hopefully not) a bunch of nuts here.

Ovrszd #16 I'll not argue the potential danger of shooting in the air. But I'll also not declare peoples that do as being from third world countries and/or a bunch of nuts. That mentality is why us Americans are so well loved on this Planet.

Silvic # 53 You obviously have never been to many, many places on this planet that are third world countries and see what happens when they get into a celebratory mood.
.....
#7 was enough to let me know this was a sensible man posting. #15 made me wonder why the poster picked out third world countries. #53 showed me how right #16 is and that ovrszd is exceptionally sensible and astute – particularly with his final sentence.

Then this shows my opinion of the man is correct:-
Ovrszd # 60 We live on a very large planet. So, you are correct, I've not been to many, many places on this planet that are third world countries. Only Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Northern Africa, all while wearing combat gear. But I never considered them inferior to me. I respected them and their beliefs because I know one of the key elements to my survival was understanding the enemy and/or society at hand. I believe I earlier stated that I understood the OP's intent with this thread and don't consider him inferior either.
...........

Would there were more Americans like you sir, then the rest of the world would have a different generalised view of you all.

I think the consensus is.....firing a firearm up in the air is not a good thing. As a Hunter Ed. Instructor.....we tell students......always control the muzzle......be sure of your target and what lies beyond.....never point a firearm at anything you don't want to shoot or kill. We cite an example that happened a few years ago in our state.....several people partying along a river firing rifles up in the air.......a young girl about a half mile away attending a family back yard picnic was tragically killed. Be a responsible gun owner......don't do it!!

No a true statement but you know nothing of me either and my background

Oh, wow. When you get to know Richard a bit better, you are going to be sorry you phrased it that way.
Not in the least sorry. His statement stood as written as does mine. He knows better and that behavior and actions that is not safe and puts people at risk is not a good thing. He also knows that it is common in places that we both were in that people celebrate with firing weapons into the air indiscriminately.

Well since we have been to many of the same places I can only wonder if our paths may have crossed. I stand by my comments about much of the world celebrating in the manner that I described and the dangers that it creates. You well know those dangers with your background. I lived with and trained many of those folks in many capacities over the years and I appreciate their culture and way of life and never considered them inferior (that was your choice of words) but dangerous behavior is still dangerous behavior.

This thread is becoming depressing to me. Who said anybody shot off rounds into the air? I'm saddened by the number of replies to this effect when the only reason to make such a reply is to fabricate this in your minds. I guess it's human nature to read into something you want to believe and ignore what is actually there. I see this with clients from time to time and understand that the biggest hurdle in communication is what the other person imagines is being said.

I live out in the country, I shoot my guns day and night. Night hunting is legal here for a variety of animals. Target shooting any time of the day or night is legal. And yes, during the dark hours of the night, I have been know to pull out the guns and set up a target. I have lights out side and we can clearly see what we are aiming at. I guess for those of you who do not have lights outside your homes, shooting at night time wouldn't make any sense. Assuming that those of us who have shot guns at night do not have lights, does not make any sense.

If my backstop is the same during the day as it is at night, what is the difference? If you are commenting about somebody who shoots at night, why do you assume that he or she is being unsafe? I know a lot of rifle ranges have night shooting. They also have lights so you can see at night!!!

It could be worse. What if everyone shot arrows into the air at night....run Forrest, run!
