Yep the face of a cord. 4ft by 8ft and 1 row deep. That's how I have always known it.
I believe it is illegal to sell a face cord here. I would not dare to say a face cord here because people relate that to a scam way to sell wood.

I don't think I've ever seen anybody sell anything but a face cord here. Also, when calling around for insurance quotes, several companies made it clear that if you burn more than 3 FACE cord per year, they're not interested in your business. Yes, I'm sure they're talking about face cord because I burn about 3 full cords a year, so I was sure to clarify.

I thought I posted this pic before but I couldn't find it in this thread. The loggers left me this big log (about 12-13ft long) because it wouldn't fit in their whole tree chipper:

... well I finally got around to reducing it so I could cart it off to my wood pile. I had to reduce it to rounds and pick them up with the pallet forks. I used my F-150 to move them as that was quicker than taking them one by one with the tractor. My daughter was manning the camera and took these:

These were further up the log where is was a bit more skinny. They measured about 39-41" The bigger pieces were 48" or more at the base but they wouldn't stay together when I cut them ... ended up with big moon shaped pieces.

Daughter counted the rings to the hollow portion and I remember it was over 200 so who knows how old it really was ... 300-350 maybe?

This is the smallest diameter where the loggers cut it at where it branched out:

I'm thankful it was hollow or my 20" saw wouldn't have been able to cut it!

That's Somebeech!

In Michigan there is no such thing as a face cord (legally), but if there where it would be 16" x 4' x 8' (1/3 of a full or federal or just plain cord cord)

I'd love to see a cite of the MCL governing this. I don't think this is true as both the DNR and Dept of Ag refer to face cords in their documents.

Ever heard of a "thrown cord"? As I understand it, it's the amount of wood that can be thrown into the bed of a full-size truck. I guess it's a legal unit of sale in some states.

Vermont investigated a ratio for a thrown in cord back in the seventies but they never came up with a figure that everybody would agree to. If I remember correctly they were in the area of 175 cu. ft. loose being equal to a stacked cord. The buyers wanted it higher the sellers wanted it lower.
A full sized pickup often runs out of springs before it runs out of room. I could never take more then a half cord to a load in an eight foot half ton Chevy work truck safely. Stacked it just came to the level of the side rails.
