I'd be embarrassed if it didn't happen to most threads that are the least bit interesting. It could be worse and just devolve into a political rant.
Ok back to the original topic.
I ,being the sage that I am acknowledged to be, think that it takes both luck and some wise decisions plus preserving through twenty or thirty years of " chicken crap"to get to a secure retirement. I have one at present. I'm not sure it will last as long as I will as the government is so over spent compared to possible incomes. If it fails it will at the same time as most other public pensions and the price of housing and golf in Florida will go down.

JDGreen , I like the subtlety of your post. This:thread has sorta drifted. Maybe it has reached its high water mark by now. My final remark on the thread is succinct: Most people make their own luck on matters financial, but health is another matter.
My dear Wife made a wry remark to day because it is my 73rd birthday. She said " My father used to say, " if I had known that I was going to live so long, I would have taken better care of myself"

One of the vendors I use told me he has sold his business effective June 1... a great guy that provides excellent service on medical equipment.

I told him I was surprised because I had thought he was thinking several years down the road...

He said he was lucky to be able to secure his retirement early...

His luck was finding a buyer that is paying a good price and an inheritance that was totally unexpected...

He said the sale and a 3 unit paid for apartment left to him means he will be able to spend more time with his wife who has had a bout with cancer that is now in remission... they want to make the best of their time even if it just means time together...

Sometimes the good things happen and this happened to a guy that has worked for everything he has... his luck means taking retirement at 62....

To each his own, but I have never understood why anybody would pay so much money for fancy coffee....I have never even tried a Starbucks or even an upscale Mickey D's coffee.

And I Sir, have no understanding of concern about my Credit Score. I'm 63 years old and have never inquired about that. Have no idea. The only reason I can think of to be concerned would be if I were going heavily in debt. Which I am not.

Me neither on the coffee. Just making the point that everyone has their own "important" stuff. Coffee. Credit Scores. Etc.

A lot of this thread has been about Managing Money - most points raised I agree with.

A smart guy I worked for once-upon-a-time made the distinction - You don't get to Manage Time, you get to Manage how You spend Time. Smart meaning Wise, but I didn't want to type that as A wise-guy I know...

I think that most of us attach too much to money as a way of determining success. We all have personal goals and aspirations; because we don't always reach them doesn't mean we have failed. What we do with what we have is probably a better indicator of success. Luck is a part of this - for some it makes a huge difference, for others not so much. Retirement involves a number of actions/decisions/choices over the years and maybe, a bit of luck too (both +ve and -ve).
