where is best place to buy ym1700 starter? hoye has one made in Germany for about $330, other places have hitachi for about $150-180. what would be the better buy?
There's a seller on ebay with something like 40,000 positive feedbacks. His (new, replica) is about $100.
From him I bought the nearly identical starter for a larger Yanmar and I like it, it spins fast. Search here for my old posts on this - I'm busy outside this afternoon or I could find the thread for you.
Look for a small independent starter and alternator repair shop near you, Take the starter with you as they will likely recognize it and can either fix it or offer a cheap replacement (from China).
The part numbers dont mean much except to the dealer.
Starters are used on a wide variety of engines built by different companies.
I have given the same advice to other forrum members and it worked out well for them.

I looked at cheap starters on ebay & amazon, they don't look like my ym1700 starter & they don't tell you how many teeth. I am leaning toward the Hoye starter, all the parts I bought from them are first rate.
I had my Ym2000 rebuilt in Apr. 2011 72.75$. 90day Guaranteed. Same starter as the 1700. Most any Auto Elec. shop will rebuild it. Not the first complaint to the day and having the original starter is a big plus. If it can't be rebuilt/repaired then I would spend the money and replace it. Save yourself a few Hundred Bucks.
I had upgraded my Nippon-Denso on the JD850 (aka YM2500). It was the older technology of solenoid that died. Got an Offset Gear Reduction starter (OSGR starter) for under $100. It was more powerful too. Didn't have to worry about letting the stater cool down after 10 seconds of cranking. I could crank till the cows came how.
So, depending on the OE maker of your Yanmar starter, there could be a newer technology replacement at a better price too.
Nippon-Denso makes the OE 1.4kW for the tractors and the 2.0kW for Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, etc. I had found a good cross-reference chart on the web that matched the splines, teeth, mounting holes and opening, and wire hook-up. It was basically a drop in upgrade.
Many of our Yanmars originally started with the old school VR (voltage regulators), now places all over the web along with Hoyes and Fredricks offer the solid state upgrades too. Wish they did that for the starters, the prices would be a better deal.
Ok, I looked up my old post. I bought the starter Bmaverick described above, 2.0kw of torque compared to the 1.4kw original on my YM240. Same vendor except via ebay. I see rareelectrical now has over 70,000 positive feedbacks. None of his few negative feedbacks that I reviewed relates to product quality, only shipping screwups, (ordered wrong part and expensive restock fee, etc) and those are below 1%. In summary a quality source. The starter I ordered there has been in service four years now, and is like new.
