Tractor Sizing How important is rear diff lock on CUT?

/ How important is rear diff lock on CUT? #61
My JD HST had both diff lock and usable split brakes. For the first couple of years things were great and I used the diff lock all the time. Then one winter my son and our tenant took turns clearing the driveway and wore the square corners off the diff lock by applying it while one wheel was spinning and waiting for it to "click in". Now it won't lock so its brakes only. Not as good, but better than my BILs Massey that also requires both feet on the same side to work the HST pedal AND the brakes....

Other then having insufficient funds in the check book (a problem I've had a lot over the years) why not get it fixed?

A differential lock is a nice feature to have as long as it is used correctly. I read on here often where people have torn them up. Also I have looked at a lot of used utility tractors over the years and have seen a lot of them with the linkage frozen up because of lack of use. That tells me there are people out there hat don't use them much. I don't use mine because of fear of breaking. Now on a big row crop tractor we use them all the time with no issues. The setup is much better on the big tractors.

The diff lock on my Kubota L3240 is activated by pushing down on the foot lever. Most often I need it when going up a steep hill, which throws some of my weight onto the back of the seat. Under those circumstances the lever is so stiff it unweights the seat and the safety cutoff shuts down the engine. The first time this happened I though the tractor was broken:confused2: Eventually I figured out how to wedge my knee under the steering wheel while pushing on the diff lock lever, but that sure makes it hard to steer

If you got 2wd and no diff lock, you only have 1wd
If you got 4wd and no diff lock, you only have 2wd

I use my diff lock most when moving dirt/gravel. Helps me push deeper into pile.

I may get in trouble for saying this, but that's one of the first mods I did to mine. When leaning to the right to look around the hood to see where my bucket was, the springy seat would lean with me just far enough to kill the tractor. It was incredibly aggravating. So I wrapped a zip tie in such a way to hold the little lever down. No more safety shut off

With 4wd and r1 tires, diff loc dont add much help at all in the muck IMO

I agree. It does not help much with R4's either.
