Billrog - what I was curious to was the energy and effort required to get the wood ready, i.e. which is higher in calories/BTU - cutting smaller diameter wood or cutting AND splitting larger pieces - assuming you end up with the same size pieces (albeit I am sure not the same shape)? Think the ultimate lazy - that is me - which is easier?

A different kind of "tractor and wood" pic......cleaning up around the farm.

A lot of nice looking buildings that are probably very underutilized now. Is that a permanently mounted bale elevator on the barn?

Just kind of seems that when I work with smaller wood, I am always pleased with the added stockpile. When I bust my back with big wood, I always seem to end up thinking "Is that all?" I got for all that work!

In Europe they sometimes practice what is called cappicing where they leave the stumps high and let them send up multiple shoots that are allowed to grow to about four inch diameter then are cut down for fire wood. It dates back to when it was all hand saw work. I expect it creates a lot more waste brush then full sized trees but gives them a short crop rotation.
Except for saw logs I like to use the whole tree out to two inch limbs. But I'm not above cutting a six inch pole that is in the way. I wouldn't want to restrict myself to just cutting trees of one size. The big blocks get rolled into the loader bucket and lifted up to the splitter beam with as little input from my back as possible.

All of the buildings are still used for something, just not their original use. Yes it's a permanently attached bale elevator but we may remove it one of these years and close up the openings to put new metal on the outside. Darn pigeons make a big mess. We've even had owls and red-tailed hawks nest and raise young inside the tallest barn.

If small and straight enough:

If small enough and don't care too much about the ends or cut lengths:

There is another maker of such machines who offers longer cuts but I can't put my mouse on it.

Again, if small and straight enough, but you don't want to mess with or the mess of, cutting it, and aren't too worried about how cleanly it splits the small wood, I know of someone with one of these and likes it:

If small enough and you don't have the budget or inclination for the above, bucking tables, or buzz/cordwood saws:

Regarding buzz/cordwood saws, there is a double bladed model (but I can't for the life of me work out how they can avoid the centre bit of wood binding sometimes, with potentially serious consequences.)

Cool videos. Those lancman guys looked more like they were ready to hit the autobahn on their BMW bikes in that leather attire.

That bundling contraption seems like a bit of a waste of a big tractor. If you happen to be selling firewood in those round bundles, you would think you would automate the entire process and not have two guys there in their motorcycle suits! lol
