4.5 ratio PTO generator gear box

I have asked several companies to import these, as I don't want to run my tractor @ PTO speed to run a small PTO generator, just for my house and one company listened.

4.5 ratio means, your PTO has to spin only @ 400rpm to get needed 1,800rpm to generator, which translates to fuel savings and longer live for your tractor. Most PTO generators currently for sale require 540rpm @ PTO to get 1800rpm/60hz.


If you are interested, call 'em up. They only have 5 left as of today. They are asking a very reasonable $352/each.

This will lug your engine. In the long run the minimal fuel savings vs initial cost and increased wear seem like a no win situation to me.

What is it you think you are saving and how much of it ? Just run the tractor at 540pto rpm and be done with it.

I think he is looking at the fuel savings of running the engine at a lower RPM which is probably true if the tractor makes enough HP at the lower RPM to operate the generator. Lots of variables on this one.

He is not saving enough per day to pay the interest on the cost of the gearbox. How many hours a year does he operate this emergency only generator ?
What happens when somebody else uses the generator and rev's the pto rpm to 540?
If he wants to save money. Find something electric and install a timer so it operates during the lowest rate period. Seal some air leaks around heated or cooled buildings.
It's false economy in this application with the 4.5 X 1 gearbox.

That maybe the George character that had some nifty Lister and Petter engine projects until the power tripping donkeys at the EPA shut down imports of clone engines from India.

Wow. Lots of negativity.

This will help guys with big tractors. 50 horse and up at pto. Which burn lots of fuel, especially when running @ full pto speed for days.

A house usually needs only about 10kw or less. 10kw generator only needs 20hp at the pto.
If you have large tractor, why would you lug it at full pto speed for something that requires such a small amount of hp? Especially if you have long outages (several days+).

In such a scenario $350 gear box will pay for itself in no time.

Then again, not everybody has large tractor and not everybody has long outages.

I use such a gearbox to slow my 2100 rpm mid pto to 540 to run my PTO generator and an irrigation pump off my F-935 lawnmower.
