Who can afford a new truck anymore?

However I bet a LOT of pickup owners fit the category of buying a truck for use as a car, even if they don't want to admit it.

Yes and add those who could get away with a $200 hitch and $800 trailer behind their cars and we would see far less of those mammoths on the roads

I have 2 trucks a 2001 Ford F-250 gas V-10 and a 2005 f350 diesel. Both paid for.

I figure a new truck is about 50 to 60 thousand. Monthly payment let's say 400 to 500 a month.
Now if I save that money each month that equals a whole lot of repairs. I could afford to rebuild one of those trucks every two years at that amount of money. I am sticking with what I have.

But "mammoth" is a selling point. Frankly, I started buying trucks because they were tough enough to handle poorly kept city roads AND, in a crash, I would likely fare better than the other guy in his VW.

If I had 60K to spend on a new truck, I'd pay off my mortgage, concrete my pole barn floor and buy a "new" old beater to run around in. Until that's all done I plan to hang onto my '94 GMC 2500...and for as long as possible after that. I'm not spending that kind of money on ANYTHING that doesn't have a kitchen and a 55" TV in it.:)

Yeah, but who wants to hook up a trailer just to run to the gas station for a can of lawnmower gas? And who wants the smell of that can of gas in his car?

But I did have a hitch installed on our Ford Escape just in case the Ranger dies.:D

Hauling fuel cans, or the garbage can down to the road, is something I like about our Ford Sport Trac with its tiny outside bed. We were considering a new car like a hatchback or wagon which I wouldn't put fuel or garbage cans inside.

CNN Money published a list of the top most profitable cars/trucks. The lsit was ranked by profits made by the manufacturer on the vehicle --- cumulative since 1995.

The top 3 slots were trucks --- (1). F-150 at $50 billion, (2). Silverado/Sierra at $40 billion and (3). RAM at $18 billion.

So, not only are trucks expensive --- they are great sellers and quite profitable. Not exactly a combination that suggests lower prices anytime soon.

For those of us who prefer a rear wheel drive vehicle . Truck is the only option besides a high performance sports car.

Hmmmmm ... We bought a 2010 Prius BECAUSE it gets about 50mpg. It had NOTHING to do with Eco or Status. The Prius has cost us not one cent in maintenance beyond oil changes. We bought an extended warranty that is fully refundable - if it is not used (and it has not been.) The Prius is a GREAT CAR. It is well built, peppier than you would think and we will probably replace it one day with another.

I agree "full" electric cars are not ready for prime time. However, electric motors can produce tremendous pull power and blazing speed and acceleration. Their day is coming. If you doubt the power of electric, just take a look at a modern locomotive.

If you have not noticed . The locomotive traction motors are powered via an electrical generator supplied from a diesel internal combustion engine . Load a whole rail car with 120tons of lead acid batteries and figure how far that 100 car freight train will travel on one charge.

Realistically I don't think that will ever happen.

Somebody should introduce you to the horrors of salted roads. You can't repair what has disappeared due to corrosion. We import pristine rust free parts from the U.S. South West.
