Somehow I don't think that she got that way without help.
I don't understand some people... I hunt, fish, trap, raise my own poultry to eat,
But to do something simply to torture an animal is something which I can't condone.

Agreed. Just a cruel thing.

Here in Missouri in the Spring, there are many many turtles crossing roads. Many do not make it across alive. I guess that is where the old line "why did the turtle cross the road" comes from. Not very smart if you ask me.

On one of our first dates, The Plant Manager pulled her car over after passing a snapper that had just stepped out onto a 4 lane street.
She hopped out of the car and before I could comprehend what she was doing, she dragged it across all 4 lanes to the other side that it was headed for.
It wasn't as big as a manhole cover, but it was easily the size of an LP record.
I was still in shock and at a loss for words when she hopped back in the car and sped off, saying, simply "I like turtles".
That's when I knew she was a keeper.

Maybe not the same, but at least twice in the past year I have read articles about people stopping their cars to help ducklings across the road and them causing an accident either by their quick stop , or by their quick parking on shoulder that causes accidents behind them............in one case a motorcyclist was killed when he rear ended a car where the women stopped on 60 mph highway ............ I myself don't swerve or brake for small animals, for safety of myself and those around me............I don't doubt your "I like turtles" girl was done safely, but just pointing out the dark side of the equation.

I had a Biology professor back in the day that did a study on this. He put a fake turtle in the road and hid in the woods to observe. All vehicles either stopped and tried to move the turtle or made a great effort to swerve around the turtle .

Then he did the same thing with a fake snake. Most vehicles attempted to run over the snake . The rest swerved but made little effort to actually miss the snake .

We get over loaded with turtles on the road. I try my best to miss them, but won't ditch the truck either. I'll either straddle it or go around them when ever possible. Now if they are on the street I live on, then they get relocated to which ever ditch they are headed for :)

One thing that could have happened, and I have seen, is an automobile tire that just barely clips the edge of the shell of a turtle, can flip them over without doing much damage to them. Kind of like a tiddly winks sort of thing.

I have stopped for them but always know what/who are around me, never slam on brakes unless no one is behind me...

I've pulled over and walked back; every time a car comes along you think that he's going to get nailed but they usually don't get hit. As someone mentioned, most people
try to miss them. They aren't like a squirrel, when you try to straddle them they run faster or turn and run under your wheels.
