Better the last cut than the first. So now make that chain your dirt/rock chain for stuff you wouldn't use a good chain on, like roots, questionable wood that might contain nails/barbed wire. Make a chainsaw checklist in you cell phone so to not forget it and other stuff next time.

I sharpened that chain with the intent to try and use it one more time before I discarded it. Experiment really, as the cutters on one side are now 1/2 the length of the others and are well past the witness line. But your idea to save it for other uses is a much better idea.

And the checklist would not have done me any good as I had the Jeep and Woodchuck with me ...

I looked all over for a commercial method to mount my chainsaw, including ATV mounts and found nothing that was simple, easy to use and fool proof. I like your idea. I need to carry a lot of tools with a goal of storage flexibility for the many various items I am using to clear my new home site. I also have a Dewalt DCS380M1 reciprocating saw coming for cutting large roots that should "mount" in one of the 4" tubes. Here is my setup.

If I had things to do over, I might replace one of the inboard 3" and 4" tubes with a single 6" that would carry tools with a D handle.

Looks awesome, getting ready to make some of these. How did you mount the tubes to the tractor?

The tractor is 35 miles away at the moment and I would have to look to be certain. But as I recall, I used a piece of flat plate for the bottom mounting piece extending from the outside of the existing orange square stock across to the other side. I seem to recall I anchored the other end with a piece of angle. I use bolts for everything (no screws) so think I must have through bolted the angle piece also at the hood area but it was difficult to access, I seem to recall. Had I been able to weld at that point in time I would have made a one piece bracket extending across the bottom. (Now have a Miller 211 MVP). The top mounting for each tube is simply through the existing square, orange tubing.

The only difficult part was getting the carriage bolts inserted through the inside of the tubes prior to mounting the tube to the framework. I finally came upon the idea of inserting a string through the outside of each mounting hole and using gravity to allow it to drop down through the tube to a point I could grab it with my hands, tie it to the carriage bolt and gently pull the string back to the hole and the carriage bolt with it. At this point I needed to hold the string taught with one hand to keep the bolt aligned inside the tube at the bolt hole and then with the other hand used a piece of wood to then force the carriage bolt inside the tube through the hole far enough I could grab it from the outside of the tube with my other hand and pull the bolt through. Sounds more difficult than it was once you figure out out how to do the first one.

Be careful when making the hole in the tubing. The hole size needs to be small enough to capture the square end of the carriage bolt to keep it from turning when you tighten the nuts, yet large enough the bolt can be pulled through with the string still attached.

Can you tell me what the purpose of the rubber coupler at the top of each tube is? Does it extend above the tube to act as a cushion, just curious.

Thanks

Yes, exactly. It keeps the top of the tube in good condition. The 4" couplers are a bit scared up from the chainsaws bucking teeth. Had the couplers not been there, the tops of the tubes would have been a mess by now from all of the different things carried.

Oh I like that. Going to build one just like it for my new saw. Thanks for sharing.

Here is another way to mount most any chain saw, without taking up any open station space, AND it protects the saw from contact with branches, etc. I mounted one on my DK-40 and one on my ATV. Both get a lot of use and are simple to install with the included hardware.
The pic below is of a Kolpin hinged metal 'scabbard' holder. It is mounted to the existing Rops hardware on the back right side of the ROPS just above the auxiliary light and off the right rear fender.
It is easily accessible from standing next to the rear tire, and is easy to open and close. I've had it in use for years now with absolutely no problems. The unit has padding for the saw to sit on and keeps the chain out of harms way as well as keeping one from the chain teeth while being held in transport mode.

I use the right loader support post to mount a poly ammo box, with just one bolt washer and nut, to store tools in, instead of using multiple tubes that take up open station deck space. This works well for me; and to each their own design/use.....

Thought I'd throw this back into this thread to give you multiple choices for storage possibilities.

I had the same set-up on my Quad mounted to the rear carrier. I had half a rubber tie strap screwed on to loop over it to hold it in the scabbard. The problem was the gas tank breather was now horizontal and it leaked gas. Maybe this is because a quad bounces around a lot while off roading. So I rigged a scabbard on the front so the saw is horizontal. Still no mount on the Kioti. I usually put it on top of the counterweight.
