The question is why would Ford begin to make truck bodies from aluminum? Is it the second indication your full sized trucks you've grown to love are going away under current and proposed laws? The first being the removal of two cylinders from each model in the Ford line. HS

It is because of existing, and new CAFE standards, of course.

They have taken all the weight out of them they can, without doing something drastic.

There is no doubt, smaller engines, more aluminum, and other light weight materials, will be used in the future.

They have to save the planet for God's sake! :D

Ford still has V8 options for both the 1/2 ton and SD lines. The reason the V6 sell so good is they are on par or surpass the competitors V8 power plants.

It is on par or surpassed the V8 engine. You are probably the same guy that made a stink out of the Buick Grand National having a Turbo V6 until it blew blew the doors off the Corvette. Or bought a new V8 muscle car to only be smoked by a 4 door BMW 335I, again a twin turbo V6. And yes, the Eco Boos will stomp gas truck V8 including the 6.0 and 6.2 GM, Dodge Hemi, Ford 6.2, Toyota 5.7, and Nissan 5.6. Chris

This is not true the Hemi Rams with 8 speed are getting better times at the track stock than the EcoBoost.

In case you were wondering why Ford has lost some sales (and want FACTS and not just to slam them), read this: Is GM Getting Desperate With Its New Ford-Bashing Ads? - NASDAQ.com

In summary:

Ford hasn't been losing ground in the sales war because its new truck is a loser. It has been losing ground because of supply issues. In order to manufacture the new aluminum-bodied F-150, Ford had to make extensive changes at its two pickup factories.

The F-Series is America's best-selling vehicle line. Normally, both of those factories run around the clock to keep up with demand. But each needed to be shut down for 12 weeks in order to install and test the new tooling needed to make the new trucks.

The upshot is that Ford has had tight supplies of pickups for months. As a result, it has been prioritizing retail sales, allowing GM room to steal some of Ford's lucrative commercial-fleet business .

But now both factories are up and running at full speed. In just a few more weeks, Ford's dealers will have full inventories -- and Ford will get serious about retaking the ground it has lost to GM.

That's why GM is ratcheting up the competitive pressure.

If you are just in it to bash Ford, don't read that, because it won't help your cause.

My cause? We just bought a Ford Transit with Ecoboost and own a Transit Connect - and four Chevys.

But I wasn't wondering, I worked in the industry and am well aware of supply chain bottlenecks. Otherwise I could point out Transit sales are up year-over-year 2,376%....

How do you like the Transit? I'm seeing those things everywhere (I guess that 2,376% shows!). The E-Series was in desperate need of replacement.
