Folks in retail are forced to endure a wide variety of comments - some are well intentioned, while others are not. The bad thing is that the retail worker is a captive audience - if they walk away, they're risking their livelihood. Your comments may be innocent, but the guy who just left may have been a total jerk. And remember that the prices aren't their fault, the credit card machine being broken is not their fault, the fact that they're out of XX is not their fault. Be kind - your kid or grandkid may be there one day.
The OPs story was cute. The other one had nothing to do with 'laughing at ourselves' and everything to do with 'laughing at someone else'. I agree with the others who said the guy came off as a jerk or a perv.
That's a good way to be charged with sexual harassment. The younger generation have no social skills or sense of humor, they are all smart phone zombies that know nothing except texting.
