The OPs story was cute. The other one had nothing to do with 'laughing at ourselves' and everything to do with 'laughing at someone else'. I agree with the others who said the guy came off as a jerk or a perv.

Folks in retail are forced to endure a wide variety of comments - some are well intentioned, while others are not. The bad thing is that the retail worker is a captive audience - if they walk away, they're risking their livelihood. Your comments may be innocent, but the guy who just left may have been a total jerk. And remember that the prices aren't their fault, the credit card machine being broken is not their fault, the fact that they're out of XX is not their fault. Be kind - your kid or grandkid may be there one day.
I am 61. When talking to young ladies I try to be polite and make fun of myself. It amuses my wife that I can go anywhere and engage a twenty something in conversation and put them at ease. Of course having daughters and being around all their buddies helped me learn how to do so. I am non threatening and smile. gsganzer's buddy was/is an a$$hole, making the young lady very uncomfortable. How would you like somebody doing that to your daughter, wife, sister, or mother? Either of my daughters would have engaged him in a verbal bout and I guarantee he would have come off looking like a fool.
I go by the idea that I will say nothing to a woman that I wouldn't say or do if my wife was standing beside me. Being a "daddy with daughters" I find myself being protective of any young lady that appears to be in distress. I guess the daddy instincts kick in and I can't help it.

That's a good way to be charged with sexual harassment. The younger generation have no social skills or sense of humor, they are all smart phone zombies that know nothing except texting.

I agree. Friend of mine works at Wal-Mart. Lost track of the number of times she has been working the check out line I'm in. She can finish the transaction with me and never recognize me. I try to sneak thru to see if she misses knowing who I am. Then I "shock" her into reality by saying something like "ain't ya gonna say hi". She always looks confused for a second, then laughs and says "Oh you were just another Cabbage Head". That's what she calls customers. "Just have your list of customary comments at the ready and move em on thru like a herd of cattle."
I'm very Blessed that I never had to make a living doing that type of work. I'm always courteous and polite to all that serve me. What I might think is a "cute" remark might just be another smart butt to the clerk.

My first job out of high school was checking groceries in a grocery store; even got to be an asst. manager. I did this for three years full time and part time when I went to college. It was a big eye-opener for a shy country boy and it has held me in good stead for 60 years. I had practically no problem with customers, other than they were human beings. Some expect too much, some are just rude...but we were taught to be polite and speak to every person that came in the store. Most are honest; in fact I once made the mistake of mentally accepting coupons and thinking I had been paid. The lady came back a couple hours later and said she hadn't paid. I thought she was crazy, I couldn't have made such a mistake. We checked the till, and she was correct and I was embarrassed.
I expect that a female's experience could be quite different, though. It's been my experience that retail clerks in most grocery stores and especially Walmart are becoming exceptionally rude, arrogant and NOT very helpful. We had to wear white shirts, ties, be clean shaven and wear deodorant. Some of these idiots look like they came out of a side show, and are a lot worse than any customer I ever had a run in with...(except maybe one or two).
