How do you store your grease cartridges?

That's why you don't fully release the plunger, or remove the plug completely.. Loose is fine to bleed air

OK, I'll try to remember that about the plug. Thanks.

Am I the only one who spends fifteen minutes changing grease cartridges and making a mess each time???
Put an old sock on the grease gun body.

I do exactly that but most often simply don't get rid of the air the first few tries. Wouldn't it be easier if the air pocket was already at the body-head interface rather than at the bottom of the grease tube?
Theres no air there at time of cartridge change. It escapes past the pusher cup over time. ... I have good luck catching the last good pump stroke by occasionally pulling the plunger rod out til I get resistance to check the amount left. If you can anticipate and detect the last charged stroke the pump remains primed.

i am wondering if you are putting the cartridge in backwards.

one end of cartridge there is a little lip around the outside. (goes towards head) and the other end there is no lip and more likely more air space were the plunger on a spring goes into the cartridge.

===========
i don't like changing cartridges due to simple fact, they can be messy, more so if either end does not want to unscrew and getting a grip to get things unscrewed ((normally a rag / paper towel works.

and then once new cartridge is replaced trying to get the "plunger" end to screw in can be a pain. ((last thing that gets screwed back together))

it generally only takes a few pumps, and pressing the "air bleeder button" a couple times to get grease to flow.

===========
fuel funnels, oil funnels, grease gun share a common plastic container. and is located on shelf were all the fuel cans, various oils, and various spray cans for automotive / tractor are kept. for quick easy access.

normally there is a roll of paper towels stored right next to the plastic container, so i can take a piece of paper towel to wipe a funnel out or, have a couple on hand when a grease stuff.

I'm putting them in correctly, I just have trouble re establishing prime. My Lincoln gun doesn't have a simple air release valve so I guess I need to have a 17mm wrench at hand to open up the spring loaded nut. Spyder's method is better but I rarely can tell if a cartridge is close to empty in time.

time to buy a new grease gun... and/or place plunger handle on ground. and grab upper portion of gun and push down, while giving the handle a few pumps.

i am kinda wondering if you grease gun is not actually a grease gun. but an oil gun. or rather for lubricants that is a bit more liquid. such as dialectic grease. and it can be a pain in rump trying to use a squeeze tube or like. so ya dump it into what kinda looks like a grease gun.

EDIT... now that i think about it. the old gun some place in shed might actually have oil in it. and was used for something way way to long ago. what for i do not remember. maybe it was for used to fill up small engines (push mower engines, chain saw engines, etc...with oil, without needing a bottle of oil and a funnel, just used the grease looking gun filled with oil)

try this.

dont thread the cap on but just one turn, just so when you release the plunger pressure that it doesn't push the cap off and push out a 12" slug of grease onto your arm.. air will escape the loose threads, and grease or even the oil on top of the grease may even START to try to extrude out the loose threads... at that point, finish screwing the cap on... should be next to no air in there...

New gun might work, but pushing on the plunger handle does nothing. The rod slides inward thru the plunger. The plunger is driven by a spring.
