You can have to many vehicles??? We have a Duramax work truck a Ford explorer sport(the small truck) a 95Ford mud truck and my 79plow truck that hasn't ran the last two winters

Yep. One of my goals is to eliminate as many engines to maintain as possible, hence a swiss army tractor.

Your modern 1/2 ton Suburban is way more truck than a older 3/4 ton. My uncle has a 97 3/4 ton diesel Suburban. My 2007 and later F150's and Nissan Titan will out work it in every catagory including towing. He may slightly win against a gas V8 in mpg but won't win vs my Eco Boost.

Keep what ya got!

Chris

My modern Suburban is a '92.

I agree. I wanted a Excursions so bad when they came out but it's just not a truck. My father had 3 Expedition's over the years and my BIL has one now. I bet they borrow my truck for truck work they just can't do 3 to 4 times per year. I have never had to borrow theirs.

Its that infrequent use thing that lots of folks use to justify a pickup truck purchase when in reality, its much cheaper to borrow your truck, or a friends truck, or rent a truck, than it is to own a truck VS a car. That's why we bought the Suburban for a 2nd vehicle and a car hauler trailer. The Suburban can haul up to 9 people (ours is 8) and/or cargo and the car hauler trailer can haul our tractor, lumber, dirt, rocks, etc... You can't carry more than 5 people in most pickups (and 3 adults in the back aren't usually too comfortable) and you still need a trailer to haul a tractor. Most pickups with crew cabs have short beds, too, so they're limited in volume in the bed. A car hauler trailer can carry more than twice the volume of a full-sized pickup truck as well.

I realize that Suburbans don't have the same weight towing capacity as heavier pickups, but for us, we don't need that capacity. We need volume for people, keeping cargo dry on a road trip, and one or two trips to the mulch store once each spring VS 3-6 trips with a pickup. And I can drive my tractor onto the trailer to unload the mulch with the FEL. Can't do that with a pickup.

For us, it was the best choice. No one else in our family has a truck (my brother-in-law does, but good luck getting him to do anything in a timely manner) so I get the tasks of moving everything for everyone in the family and neighborhood. It works well for us. If I had a large trailer or camper, or perhaps a very large boat, my needs might be different. For our needs though, its just right. :)

I haul gasoline at least weekly, I probably haul SOMETHING almost daily, and I much rather drive a PU than almost ANY car.

It irritates me when other people try to put their needs/wants/desires on everyone else

Yep just depends on personal 'needs'. In my case for the number of times I need to haul more than 4,or in a pinch, 5 people... I could rent a van. Come to think of it, that would have been never so far.

I hear you. For us it is kids, friends of kids, kids that play sports, grandparents, friends of parents, friends of grandparents, half the team and their equipment, grandparents going to the game, too, designated driver(that's a fun one), family vacations... it goes on and on. Since I got the car hauler trailer, I have zero use for our pickup truck. I can't think of anything I couldn't haul on the trailer VS our pickup and I can think of plenty that I can put on the trailer that couldn't fit in our pickup. Another example is we heat our home with wood. I can bring home 4 loads on the trailer that would be 9-10 in our pickup. And its easier on my back to load firewood on the low car hauler VS the bed of a pickup, too.

So now that I've tooted my own horn on my setup, when would a pickup be of more advantage over a Suburban? More towing capacity is all that comes to mind, but what else is there? If you want to haul a tractor, you'll still need a trailer. If you have a trailer, why do you need a pickup bed? 5th wheel comes to mind. What else?
