These are the new Burpee hybrids and I forget the name. It's a beefsteak variety and I mentioned the name in the tomatoes post I started a year or two ago. As with all tomatoes I grow, they get no fertilizer until the fruit sets and then I wind it to them. Easy on the nitrogen or you'll have Jack in the Beanstalk plants and no fruit. We put in a LOT of plants so we have bushels of these. We eat our fill, the dogs eat their fill and we still give most of them away.

There are many as big as the first two and they approach two pounds each. That makes a whopper of a sandwich and when the season ends the green ones left will be breaded and fried. What's not to love here?

So you planted the cukes on a trellis? Great idea.

It's a new 7 foot high exterior garden fence line. I married a garden/rabbit fence for the bottom and a 2"x4" (openings) fence for the top portion. I raised the 5 foot wide bed up with a well seasoned grass/leave compost mixture. The cucumbers are planted along the fence line and a row of tomatoes are on the inside of the row. You can see a corner of the tomato cages which are made from cattle panels from TSC. If you look real close you'll see a row of carrot tops between the cukes and tomatoes.

Man, those are pretty cucumber plants! Mine are not doing well at all. Usually they produce like rabbits, but we're just barely getting enough to eat. The plants are turning yellow and dying for some reason. I replanted the cukes, hoping maybe they would produce something by this Fall. The tomatoes have done really well this year though.

The TSC cattle panels for tomato cages is a good idea. Do you have a photo of one? I have thought of doing this myself.
