Oil & Fuel Burning used motor oil?

I too take my used oil back to the sellers, but most have restrictions on how much that will take (most have a 5 gal limit per trip). I have a deal with one if I buy 10 gal of oil, they will take back 10 gal, but others do not care how much you buy, they will only accept to the limit. The folks at Wally World told me the limits are to keep you from being inthe oil changing business and using them for oil disposal, but they will gladly sell you as much oil as you want.

I tried to build a oil drip system for my wood stove, just too hard to control.

What was hard to control about it? Did you burn just the oil or burn wood and use the UMO as a supplement?

Thanks,

drip system ... oil can thru pipe thru valve thru pipe to stove by gravity ... drip drip drip , as the temperature rises , then oil thins out and flows faster ,,, get hotter and drips even faster .. re-adjust constantly or the thing goes into run away ... gives plenty of heat , but often too much .

I guess I'm one of the nut cases here, as I've run a lot of old motor oil through some of my diesels...

I guess Cummins is full of nut cases too, as it was an option on over the road Cummins powered trucks, until epa shut that idea down.

Like many others, I let it settle the heavies out in a container, then mixed oil off the top of the container 50/50 with diesel and filtered it. I only ran it in hot weather though...

The only time I ever ran used motor oil in one of my diesels was the day the high mileage VW diesel wagon got enough cylinder ring blow-by to force crankcase oil back into the intake via the crankcase ventilation tubing. I have never seen anything like that in my rear view mirror. Black smoke like a plane crash. Traffic behind me went every which way. I tried to shut off the engine by normal key (which did not work of course.) Finally shifted into high gear and stalled the motor with the brakes. Memorable.

I save any waste petroleum products and use them to start brush piles. Assuming oil produced the same power output as diesel I would save like $20 a year burning the oil in a diesel. It is not worth the gamble to me. My Grandpa used to heat his shop with an oil burner, but it was too hard to find clean oil. An oil dripper for a wood stove would be alright, but his only burned oil. He said it worked great when it worked, but most shops mixed antifreeze with their waste oil which put out the oil burner.

ah yes , the old 1.5 / 1.6 D and TD engines run away .... most grenaded before normal drivers could figure out how to stop them .... glad you had the presence of mind to shut it down without any loss ...

did you ever experience the vac pump failing ? ... nice to learn you only have 20% brakes coming to a stop ....

No, there was a vacuum backup cannister and I did not notice the vac pump fail. I did devise a solution for extending the car life. I used a plastic Metamucil jar with the crankcase vent hose feeding into the side of the jar and gasses going out the top. This prevented crankcase oil from being fed back into the intake. I had to empty the Metamucil jar back into the crankcase every month or two. Ah, the good old days !

the little plastic "****" for vac accessories would also break off and reduce the vac considerably ....

yeh ... good old daze ....

no heat at -30 ( watch the temp needle drop when at stop lights) , slowwwww acceleration ....

All engines burn crankcase oil, from hardly any, to a quart a week. It's not the end of the world. It happens every day-all day.

I've heard of people filtering their used crankcase oil and adding to their #2 HHO tank, with no problems. Sounds like a win-win to me.
