Had this happen in front the shop, was working late during a windy storm. Heard a loud bang and thought the sign had blown over, went outside and saw a Ford Escort hit a GMC 1/2 ton head on.

Woman in the escort was drunk and going the wrong way, down hill.
Luckily nobody was seriously hurt, woman was so wasted she didn't even know what had happened.
Felt bad for the young couple in the truck.

Worked as a LEO in DC, midnight shift, pretty much a nightly occurrence having people going the wrong way.

along with this discussion of wrong direction in public corridors for whatever reason. is the problem of high speed pursuit by the law of a traffic or crime offender. whether justified or not, it does put everyone at risk including the party being pursued. many times it ends up with injury to some party, including unfortunately, those completely innocent of the decision to pursue at high speed on public highways where things go wrong in an instant.
with all of the technology the law has at hand, one would thing this could be avoided....but you read about the unfortunate consequences every day. driving is an at risk activity to begin with....why make it more dangerous in these situations...
btw you talk about 4 lane....what about 2!!!!

I've encountered 2 wrong way drivers this year. Luckily the cops got them both before they killed anyone.
The rule is, if you can't see tail lights in front of you stay in the slow lane. It's saved me twice.

Several decades ago I drove down the off ramp onto I5 and raced up the highway in the wrong direction to the next on ramp once. They were only separated by about a mile, and I was trying to evade a gang chasing me in another car. It worked, but that's not the kind of excitement I had n mind. That was before I got my first concealed weapons permit.

Had one of them recently on Rt360 W. here. I had topped a hill and several semis were coming up it when the driver appeared ahead. I swerved back and forth across the lanes flashing my lights and hoping he wasn't planning on suicide. We ended up side by side in the median as I stopped him. I looked back and everybody behind had safely stopped and left a lane open for him to go down to the crossover. He had 3 kids in the car.
We were all doing 70 and if I had just swerved and he topped the hill att he same time the others came over, it would have ended badly.

I just recalled that I have done it too. I was assigned to a job at St. Croix island refinery about 15 years ago. The airplane landed at about 11 PM and before I got my luggage and car it was after midnight so there was almost no traffic. I am driving on right side of the road and I see a truck coming right at me so I swerved to a gas station and saw several other cars driving on left side of the road. I walked in the gas station and asked what the rule is. If after midnight everybody drives on wrong side of the road. I guess the guy didn't get the joke because he told me that to drive on the left side is normal. I told him the car has steering wheel on the left side and the lights are asymmetrical shining to the right. His answer was: "So what, all cars are from the US." It would never occurred to me that there is a US territory where people drive on wrong side in wrong cars. When I told what happened next day at the refinery guys told me I was lucky. Just few weeks earlier they had serviceman arriving from France who hit a truck head on while driving at night from the airport and ended up with life threatening injuries. While renting car during later visits I saw an arrow sticker on the dash saying on which side of the road to drive. The car I rented first time was too new to have it I suppose.

Have seen more than a few city one way streets that have the arrows hidden by vegetation that has been neglected. (goes for many stop signs also)
Also some cities due to budget cut backs only place one direction arrow.
Street names is another story again, like which side of which corner is that sign? or is it hiding behind branches.

Street signs are always on the far side from you, and so small you have to cross the street to read it.
