X485
I have a X485 that I am considering to add a rear PTO and Type 1 3 point hitch. I would like to purchase and use an approximately 15 HP PTO chipper/shredder. My local JD dealer advised that a PTO Chipper/Shredder should not be used on this tractor as it does not have a "free wheeling clutch" in the transmission and as such when the chipper is shut off, the large flywheel in the chipper will continue to turn. This will cause significant damage to the transmission. Any comments or opinions on this ?

Thx, good idea. Any particular that you would recommend ?

No, I don't own one as my tractor has an independent PTO. Suggest reading the reviews on-line, the link I previously posted would be a start.

Check first, though, some chippers already have a built in overrun clutch, so you don't need to buy a separate one. Others don't, of course,

good luck,

Given the expense of adding the PTO and 3PH hardware in addition to the possible transmission issues, it may be more wise to simply get a small towable chipper/shredder that has it's own small 8-13HP engine that you could easily pull around with your X485.

Wallenstein makes some VERY nice small self-powered units that are nearly identical to their PTO-driven units. They aren't your normal big box store variety.

Good points,

I am actually looking at three options, 1 - upgrade the X485 and go with a PTO Chipper/Shredder with external over ride, 2 - pull a standalone Chipper/Shredder or 3 - upgrade the X485 to something new like the 1 series which does have a built in over ride as well as all the latest techie features. Got all winter to decide while its snowing !!

Sounds good. You might find that you need to go bigger than the 1-series as most chipper/shredders (even the small ones) require at least 25HP on the PTO. The smallest Wallenstein and Bearcat models recommend 25-45HP. A small chipper-only can sometimes get away with 15 PTO HP.

Those big 75-150 lb. flywheels can wreak havoc with your PTO clutch and brake.

I've been shopping for a chipper/shredder myself and even though I have a JD 2720 with 23 PTO HP I've been seriously considering simply going with a tow-behind.

The Woods 5000 PTO chipper/shredder requires 15-40 PTO HP. I ran one quite well with a Deere 790 (23 PTO HP). This chipper/shredder (made by Bearcat, BTW) can handle up to 5" limbs...anything smaller is, of course, easier. Great implement for small farm or estate use.

In LNW's situation, I'd definitely go for a tow-behind machine. By the time he puts the money into modifying his X485, he could have put the money toward a powered chipper/shredder that would likely do a better job.

I can see your 23HP 790 working fine. The specs can sometimes be a bit confusing. They typically list lesser specs as the bare minimum and then more hefty requirements for full capacity. The Wallenstein 3" chipper/shredder lists 12-35HP required for "operation" and then 25-35HP for maximum capacity (3").

A 1-series with 15/18HP (1023E/1025R) is going to be on the lower side of the power scale.

Thks for the feedback! Have spent some time tonight reading up on the Wallenstein pull type units and am impressed with what I read. Think that the 3213 model might work well on my acreage. Will check it out at the dealers next week. Also like that it's a Canadian company - support local ! Anyone have experience with that unit ?
