but this is exactly why car dealerships have the reputation they do.

Very true, and I have had the same experience myself. BUT not all car dealerships do this. They probably are in the minority, but there are hassle free ones out there.. And then there are the ones you went to today. I can think of 2 good ones and several bad ones in my area. One thing I always do is as soon as the butt hits the finance managers seat is tell them I don't want to consider anything that was not in my deal. Before they have a chance to even offer it. And then I tell them if they offer me anything I am going to walk. This usually puts a stop to the rip off hassle. Or better yet I just trade at the ones that don't do this crap to start with.

Thanks. Sumter is well outside my shopping area. Steve

Their prices are very competitive. With that said, they make up that competitiveness by trying to upsell you on $1500 of stupid packages that are on a small sheet next to the msrp sticker so it looks like THAT's the msrp and it's not. They'll take it off but you have to squeal a bit. My saleswoman knew I wasn't playing that game so he didn't even bother, the finance manager is a snake though so be careful.

Just curious. Have you ever checked the posted prices at 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. in Asheville? I have used their posted prices as a starting point in negotiations with local dealers in the Upstate.

Steve

Contrary to what it says, the link does work.

When I bought my GMC truck, they were nice folks and straight shooters and didn't try any bull at all -- I was really pleased with that experience. But I can remember a previous purchase of a Honda where I basically had to tell the finance guy "listen I am only buying the car, so stop wasting our time with the extras". It was relentless -- warranties, paint treatment, interior treatment, tire warranty, extended warranty, etc, etc, etc. And they act like you must be stupid when you turn all that stuff down. Another time a finance manager said something like "as a gift to you we will defer the first monthly payment due date for 90 days". To which I replied, no thanks, that will just rack up more interest at the worst possible time in the loan's life. I wonder how many idiots fall for that one. Those finance guys are a bunch of sly dogs.

We picked a white Camry similar to the op and the finance guy did try to push the gap insurance but turned it down and that was it.

It just depends on the dealer and as already stated, if they offer it, it benefits them.

Yeah he basically told me I was stupid for not wanting GAP insurance on a brand new car with thousand and thousands in equity in it. His argument was "but it depreciates so rapidly and if you hit a deer it will total the car and you'll be screwed cause your insurance won't cover the car and blah blah blah". I replied "if a deer totals this car and does frame damage to it then you better keep this piece of junk and I'll be on my way to buy something else!" And said the same thing about the depreciation. "Toyota always touts how Camry's hold their value so well and you're telling me how fast they depreciate. I wonder how Toyota corporate would feel hearing you say that?"

Did they drop it after you turned it down once? Because this jerk went into a whole speech about what GAP is and why I needed it and how stupid I was for turning it down and if I was his accountant he'd fire me because I make bad financial decisions. It was quite comical watching this guy beat me up when I'm buying a $27000 car and hadn't even signed the papers yet.

He did drop it. My wife had researched it and our insurance company told us they'd charge us $20 yr if we wanted it so we did it to cover us as we were just leasing it. They were like $20mo. Toyota hasn't contacted us regarding the dealer although I'd give them high marks. We do like the Camry a lot and it's 75% American made. Only one vehicle, the Chevy van has a higher percentage.

On another note, they also sell Ford and I told the salesman to contact me regarding a new Edge lease for my FIL. After a month and him not calling we went to another dealer and ordered a new Edge. Its a nice improvement from his '13.

Here's that sticker of those dumb packages they try to tack on to the price. It's on every single vehicle on the lot too and it's really hard to get them to drop it. You really have to stand firm and make them think you're about to walk and then they still are hesitant to take it off.

Sir, you aren't going to like this, but you should always seek financing outside the dealership, only then will you know the true 'deal' you are getting. If you are a member of a credit union, check their rates and terms, then get pre-qualified. You then walk into the dealership in (somewhat) of a position of stregnth. After you negotiate the price, and when you go to the financing team, let them know your prenegociated financing deal (price per K per term). If they can beat it, ok, if not, you know you shopped the best financing deal. And good to you for helping your mother, I lost mine 3 months ago. Enjoy these times with her. And PS, don't ever fall for that extra add-on crap. Good luck.
