Hello everyone!

I have been lurking for more than a year gleaning as much information as I could from all the great information on this forum.

As an introduction, I am a retired active duty Coast Guard/Navy (29 years CG/4 Navy) Chief Warrant Officer who is still working for the Coast Guard in a civilian capacity in Houston, TX. I retired in 2008 in D.C. to take a CG civilian job there. In 2012, I was offered a CG job in Houston (had been stationed here from 1996-2000) and, with a son and grandson here, my wife was not going to let me turn it down. We moved here in January 2012 and bought a big home in the suburbs. Within a year we wished we would have rented first to get the lay of the land instead of doing what we had always done...race around three counties with a realtor looking for a home in a subdivision.

After some starts and stops this year with buying and selling undeveloped acreage we ended up finding a home on 7.5 acres in Alvin, TX. About 5 of the acres is currently mowed and it truly looks like a park setting. The rest is thick woods primarily bordering the property. My wife and I never thought we would want to mow 5 acres of grass but it is so nice looking we will keep it the way it is at least for awhile until we figure out if it is going to be too much. My wife is interested in planting wild flowers on some of it so we don't have to mow so much...we'll see.

After many visits to different tractor dealers, constant searching and reading on this and other forums, discussions with a handful of people at work that own tractors, etc. I just placed an order for a 2015 Kubota L4060HST with FEL. Unfortunately, I was told that it won't be here until Jan-Feb 2016. I'll admit that it was hard to pull the trigger on this tractor due to cost but I wanted something that would last us the rest of our lives and that was something that my wife could operate. The L4060 will surely fill the bill.

As I know from other forums, it's just talk until you post pictures; I will put some pictures up once the Kubota is delivered.

I look forward to continuing my tractor and attachments education that I have received on this great forum. Thanks all!

Good choice.

Welcome to TBN.

The Grand L tractors are imported, whole, from Japan. There seem to be plenty of tractors available but Kubota/USA is running months behind on Georgia manufactured FELs. Kubota is building a third manufacturing plant in Georgia to catch up with Loader, Backhoe and Z-turn demand.

I forecast a six foot wide Finish Mower and a Ratchet Rake attachment for your FEL bucket in your near future.

Thanks for the welcome. Interesting info on the manufacturing process.

I actually have a 6' Land Pride rotary mower on order right now but I have been really torn between that and a finish mower. I'm not certain I want to buy both and I have convinced myself (maybe wrongly) that the rotary mower will be fine for most of the areas further away from the house (my wife will be the captain of a zero turn mower for in-close work). Plus, I can use it to help cut a trail (and maintain it) in the brush and woods behind my house.

As far as the Ratchet Rack...I have had that and the company's "Rip and Dig" bookmarked for quite a while and plan to order that at some point in the future. I have also been looking at a Root Grapple from Everything Attachments. I already have a bunch of projects that I could use that for.

Thank you. We were told by the previous owner of our home that Nolan Ryan grew up on the same country road as we now live on. She knows where it is at but we keep forgetting to ask where. It evidently is less than a mile down the road but the house is no longer there. Ironically, my son has been a Nolan Ryan fan since back in the days of him playing for the Angels and named our first grandson Nolan Ryan. I guess it was inevitable that we were going to end up in Alvin! ;)

Congratulations on you new Kubota, I am a big fan of the HST+. No doubt a finish mower will give you a really nice cut, we have a 7' and 8', but got tired of changing implements and now just use a RCR2672 on our L5740HSTC and Woods DS1260 on our M8540HDC on all areas and it looks good enough for us, we mow every two weeks. The thee acres in the background was mowed using a rotary cutter. We use it in the woods, fields, pond levies, road ditches etc.
