Strange things found in the forest

My wife and I camped in Natural Bridge State Park in Kentucky many years ago. We wanted to hike up to see the natural arch. From the campground, it was a several mile hike up some fairly steep terrain. So we load up with food and water and off we went. Pretty vigorous hike. When we get to the top, there's people all over the place. We saw very few on the trail, but it was somewhat crowded. What the heck? Then we see a sign for a chair-lift that came up from a parking lot on the other side of the hill!
:confused3:

Anyhow, many long lost roads and wagon paths are all but obscured by mother nature rather quickly.

Did a week backpacking there in the early 80's. There are many natural arches in the park, but the tourists go to one.
couple pics of some of the other arches in the park that most people don't get to, and one of me rapeling.

Nice!

One thing I remember about Kentucky state parks back then (80's) was how clean the campgrounds were, and, they had washing machines! :)

All i had was a tarp to rig as a tent, and it was cold and snowed a couple times. Beautiful park.

as a 12/13 year old we went exploring around the farms in our area and found a couple of old adit mine shafts, so being young and stupid we went in. Most of the time we could crawl, but sometimes we would have to slither through on our bellies and hope it widened up enough to turn around. by the time we were 15 or so we couldn't fit anymore. 1 shaft had amazing stalactites and stalagmites so we made a package of our favorite comics, drinks, stolen cigarettes etc and put them in there for someone to find one day. we often found old bushmen artifacts around the mines, and the very rusted remains of a martini henry rifle.
On the next hill over a booby trapped arms cash was found with all sorts of stuff from the bush war. lucky for us we didn't find it first or we would have blown ourselves sky high.

Welcome to the forums. Pardon my ignorance, but what was the "bush war" ? And when?

I left this next bit out about the map. Meant to say it but got distracted.:laughing::laughing::laughing: The cut out map section covered the area we were walking in.... So if he/she was bread crumbing, he used the most important part of the map given the location of the map section.:eek::laughing::laughing::laughing: Later, Dan
The way you described it being located within a very private area of thick brush made me think someone was trying to make toilet paper in a pinch and the piece that you found was the part that was really needed so it got spared. Then disregarded once he/she no longer needed it. luckily you found the piece that you did not another yuck.

I worked at the Healy ranch off & on from about 12 to 16.
Shortly before WW2 they had a southern style "Big House" that had burnt down. In the ruins I found a couple of old swards . Great find for a young boy. Played pirate games with them.
On 1 ride a small dog went with up & treed a bob cat. Mrs Healy took out a pistol & shot it.

Another day cane up on a mother "Chulo" ( Cota Mundi ) (spelling ???) with young kids. I knocked 2 of the kids out of the tree. With pine cones or rocks. We each took 1 home. When young they are playful & fun Took mine to school 1 day for show & tell. The other kids & he had great time, petting & scratching his belly. As he aged he kept getting meaner all the time, got to where on my mother could even feed him. He even chewed a few inches off his tail. Took him back to the mountains & let him go.
On another ride we caught a mountain lion cub. To see that story & news paper article go to "Bad day at black rock thread.

To small for TP. And the map paper was water proof so it would not work well as TP.:laughing::laughing::laughing: They really needed the map section too since they were in the middle of that portion of the map. The paper was right next to a blown down tree that was too high to crawl over so you had to crawl under as I best remember. I think they lost the paper when they went under the tree. What I could not figure out is if they were going in the same direction as I was or in the opposite direction. Did they loose the paper before going under the tree or after. :confused3::laughing::laughing::laughing:
